RE: THE SOUNDTRACK OF YOUR LIFE?

The Stones weren't always the number one band I listened to, and these days, they probably once again aren't. They're still my favorite band, but I don't need to listen to them all the time these days. Plus, I can't rank anything or make a list that means anything. I know who my favorite is, but after that I just like everyone I like. But through the years it's been like this (sort of).

Start off with Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry and all kinds of fifties rock. My mom played it all the time and I loved it! Still do.

It didn't exist yet, but the Nuggets box should be next. I bought a radio and I thought the best songs on it were the ones you find on Nuggets. I had no idea everyone didn't think these were the best songs in the whole world!

Manfred Mann's Earth Band - The first time I heard Solar Fire I pretty much lost it. I've owned more copies of that than any other record because I wore so many of them out. They were never my favorite band because I mostly just love Solar Fire, really like The Good Earth and don't mind most of their other stuff. But when I was a kid on a banana bike, they were really important to me.

Yes - My first favorite band in the world. I still like them a lot, but I can pretty much still remember buying every one of their albums that I own. I'm not much of a Prog rock kind of person, but I still like Yes, but up pretty much through Tormato and then I can listen to 90125 now and then but I'm out after that.

The Doors - They were my favorite band in high school. Then they weren't and I rarely listen to them these days.

Punk Rock - Because it was such a singles driven thing, I won't really pick out one band. But The Sex Pistols, Elvis Costello, The Buzzcocks, The Clash - these bands changed it all (The Sex Pistols changed everything).

Then I started getting into The Stones and that obsession lasted quite a long time.

Around the late 90's I started getting in to the music I always listened to on college radio a lot more because the commercial radio stations all got bought up by Clear Channel and all played the same shit I had heard in high school, or some shitty country music that sounded like Journey by guys wearing cowboy hats to me. So I had to start buying those albums to really hear them regularly. So I started listening to The Replacements, Lemonheads, Dream Syndicate - all that stuff that was college rock back then. I still have a lot of it. Some alternative country, like Uncle Tupelo and Whiskeytown. I got more into that a little later. Jason and the Scorchers, The Blasters. I still like that stuff.

Then Lucero. I still love those guys and they were my "new favorite band" for a long time. That spot changes when bands are no longer new to me. I still think they're great and haven't made a bad record yet.

I think The Dexateens followed. I still love them and I can't figure out why they aren't considered the greatest thing since sliced bread, but they're one of my favorites and I don't think they even have a bad song.

Currently I can't stop listening to Wussy. Man, I love that band! I could play them all day (and I often do).

And that leaves out Bowie, Steely Dan, Nick Lowe/Dave Edmunds/Rockpile, Dr. Feelgood, Eddie and the Hot Rods - I still listen to these bands all the time and I have for pretty much my entire life by now.
