Of course he needed a great band to back him. They are all legends. BTW Jagger's solo career was very good. The problem is you really can't go from The Stones to another band. Daryl Hall was on Howard Stern last year and also explained his lack of solo success on the same problem. He is associated with a brand that his fans love, Hall & Oates. He said it was hard and almost impossible to break free of the brand, he said to Howard, ask Mick Jagger. Stones fans want The Stones. I guess Phil Collins is not only an amazing talent, but also did it at the right time. His huge solo success pretty much complimented Genesis success.
