A few weeks ago there was a post concerning Taylor's worth to the band. I agree with Keno too, in that Brian was essential. The Glimmers would not have made it so big if Brian didn't get things started. It was HIS sound that made The Rolling Stones The Rolling Stones.
Then Mick Taylor stepped in and, IMO, it was HIS sound that made the Rolling Stones the Rolling Stones during his tenure. Not taking anything away from Mick and Keith, but they definitely needed that third wheel to stay on top. (First Brian and then Taylor). If Ron Wood had stepped in for Sticky Fingers, Exile, GHS and IORR I think The Stones may have been done. I don't think he could have done what MT did for them.
With the exception of Some Girls, the Ron Wood Era Stones were NOt that great. Of course, I love the Stones and have been loyal enough to buy and like some of those albums,but let's face it. If the Rolling Stones started with Black and Blue, they would be gone today. Ronnie is not as good a third wheel as BJ and MT...pretty much proving Keno's point that they couldn't do it alone.
The Stones always had that sullen image. Nobody smiled at photo shoots and they always seemed to have an attitude during interviews, which I thought was great and their M.O. Ronnie, while a very good guitarist (No MT) is too much a clown for me. There was something sexy and seductive about Brian and the elusive Taylor. It enhanced the Stones image. Made them dangerous and attractive in addition to the masterful musicians that they were/are. It's just my opinin of course, but Ronnie just doesn't do it for me. He is too much Mick and Keith's puppet where as Brian and Mick T weren't...and I respected the HELL out of that.
