Wood/Richards/Rock Hall/Concept LPs/John vs Paul

Week 818 of our Stones poll is here, and this week’s question is: Ron Wood singing 'Ooh La La' vs Keith Richards singing one or 2 of his songs on the upcoming US mini tour, which would you prefer to hear? We will return to answering tour questions this week since they seem to be popular. This question will have 4 choices to choose from. When you see the choices, you will realize that this question is really asking if you want to hear both of them sing, just one or the other, or neither one of them sing any lead at all. I’m pretty sure (somebody please correct me if I’m wrong) that Ronnie has never been given the opportunity to sing lead live while in the Stones. He of course had a hit song while singing lead in the Faces, that being the song listed in the poll question, “'Ooh La La”. Perhaps most only remember it in that old car commercial that ran a few years ago. I did run a differently worded poll question back in 2007 asking if fans would like to hear Ronnie sing this song back then, and an overwhelming number, close to 70%, said “yes”, but it has never happened.

So, it’s time to vote now, so let’s see how fans still feel about Ronnie singing on this new, upcoming tour, or for that matter, Keith, too: Stones Weekly Poll

In last week’s Stones poll we asked: Will you buy the new reissued Sticky Fingers album when it comes out? Well, my answer was in the minority on this question, and I don’t really care, I don’t want my favorite Stones album ruined with the totally unneeded stuff they are putting on the new reissue. To see the poll’s finial results, just click on this link: Stones Weekly Poll - week 817 ..

Over at the Classic Rock Poll, it’s week 460, and as usual, we will vote in 2 different polls for the week. In the first poll we will ask a question in regard to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, which this week will have its annual induction ceremony. The question is the only question we have ever asked more than once here at the Rock poll, and one we seem to ask once a year around this time, it is: Of the following artists not in the Rock 'n Roll Hall Of Fame, who should be in there the most?I do limit the list to only Classic Rockers, since this is usually a classic rock poll and the domain’s Rock site is always a classic rock site, but out of the 60 plus artists listed last year, only one got in this year, that being Stevie Ray Vaughan, who finished 6th in the voting last year. This year I did add several artists to the list that we will vote on, and I removed 6 from last year’s list – that being the ones who received no votes at all in the voting last year, so you will not see these artists listed this year: Boston, Gordon Lightfoot , Journey, Procol Harum, REO Speedwagon, nor The Scorpions. So please don’t ask me to add in any of them unless you plan on voting for them.

To make your pick for the one artist that should be in the Hall and who has been snubbed by the Hall’s voters, vote here: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question. It will be interesting to see if the same band is chosen again this year, or maybe a different artist?

I also wanted to note that our On-Going Poll for who should not be in the Rock Hall, is also still a popular poll, and everybody can vote in it once a year. This morning I added in the new inductees for 2015 to the list. So if it’s been a year or more since you last voted in this poll, you can do so again by going here: Rock Hall Vote. I’ll give an update on this poll next week, along with the results to the current weekly Rock poll we’re running this week.

In this week’s VS poll, we will for the second week in a row, pit 2 albums up against each other, as the new question asks: The Dark Side of the Moon, by Pink Floyd vs Abbey Road, by The Beatles, which concept album is better? Now first notice, that unlike last week’s question about concept albums, we are not asking for the album that tells the best story. Both of these albums this week don’t really tell a story, but more so they both have a theme to them, and why they are looked at as concept albums. A few years back, in the week of April 23, 2007, we ran a question asking for your favorite concept album, and had many such albums listed, and Dark Side of the Moon won by just 1 vote over the Beatles Abbey Road, with the Fabs also taking third place with Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Some felt the Beatles vote was split and that’s why Pink Floyd won, but I disagreed, since we were asking about different albums, not the artists, and there were 2 separate albums listed for the Beatles, but we didn’t ask who put out the best albums overall while listing the Beatles twice. But since the vote was so close, let’s take those 2 top albums only and see how they do when only up against each other.

Abbey Road, was the eleventh studio album by the the Beatles, released on September 26, 1969 in the UK and on October 1, ‘69 in the U.S. The sessions for this album were the last ones in which all four Beatles participated, as it was the last recorded Beatles album. It went to number one in both the UK and US, and in many other counties, too. In the UK, the album debuted at number 1, where it remained for 11 weeks before being displaced for one week by the Stones' Let It Bleed. But the following week it returned to the top spot and stayed there for another six weeks (completing a total of 17 weeks at #1) before being replaced by Led Zeppelin II. Abbey Road sold four million copies alone in its first 2 months of its release and today remains the Beatles' best-selling album ever.

Dark Side of the Moon was the eighth studio album by Pink Floyd, released on March 1, 1973. With founder and former member Syd Barrett's problems on Roger Waters' mind, he had an idea for this album, to cover things that "make people mad", like conflict, greed, and mental illness, and the other band members agreed that would make for a good LP. Synthesizers are all over this LP, and each side of the album is a continuous piece of music. The album topped the Billboard chart for one week in the US, and reached #2 in the UK, and remained in the charts for 741 weeks from 1973 to 1988! With over 50 million copies sold, it’s Pink Floyd's most commercially successful album and the second best-selling album ever, behind Michael Jackson’s Thiller , which has sold about 2 million more copies.

So, 2 very interesting albums to do battle with each other, which one do you feel is better? To cast your vote in this week’s VS poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll we asked: Who was or is the most underrated member of Queen? We should never go by what choice is ahead in the voting on Monday, as I did last week, and as I should have known better, since that choice ended up in a somewhat distance third place after all the votes were cast.

Still, my pick didn’t finish first anyway, but lost out by only 2 votes. To see where your pick ended up, click on: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 459. Plus the top pick for this poll can be found at our Top Ten List (Page 11) along with the others chosen from the other bands that we voted on already.

In last week’s VS poll, we asked:Tommy, by the Who vs The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, by David Bowie, which concept album tells the best story? Somewhat close voting on this one and once again I picked the loser! Yet I stick 100% to what I wrote last week about the album that ended up first. You can go here to the Classic Rock VS Poll, week 459, to find out what album that is. You can also check out the final results at the VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

Now let’s take a look at our Beatles’ poll, where it’s week 213 and we will ask this: John Lennon vs Paul McCartney, who was the better songwriter for the Beatles? This Beatles VS question could be looked at as part 1 of 3 or 4 parts, but I’m not sure how many weeks we will go with this question, but I’m sure we will also cover who was the better singer and musician of the 2, at the least.

I’m sure some Beatle fans will not care for this line of questions, yet others will, but like it or hate it, you can expect more of this kind of questions in the future (unless is sees a real low vote count), and as I type this out, I think this line of question would work well for the Stones poll, too, as I don’t think we ever asked such questions there, either (I’ll have to check first to make sure).

So, which Beatle was the better songwriter? They both came up with some great lyrics, but let’s limit this to Beatle songs only, since John wasn’t around anywhere as long as Paul still is. To vote this week’s Beatles poll, just use this link: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Beatle poll we asked: The next to final, closing lyrics to the Beatles' song 'The End', which repeat over and over again, are: Well I did strike out in my picks for all 4 polls last week, although on this question I felt I could hear 3 of the 4 choices.

To see what most fans are hearing, and the voting was close, just go to Beatle’s Weekly Poll – week 212 to see for yourself.

Well your pollmaster had a bad week last week, as I learned I will have to undergo yet another round of surgery this Wednesday, yuck! I had said I was finished with any more of that for a long time, but sometimes you got no choice, as is the case for me. I didn’t heal after this last round and this new round is needed. So please think positive thoughts for me on Wednesday, as I didn’t ask for any good vibes from my friends for the last surgery, so perhaps, just maybe, that’s why things didn’t go right? But it does get old talking about my health problems, too, and having to live with them. It reminds me of what my mother used to say about old age: “They aren’t the golden years, they’re the rusty years”, and I’m learning that now!

I thank all of you who voted in this week’s and last week’s polls, as they would mean nothing if you didn’t!
