Last weekend we played this album and Gasland was why I put it on, since we were talking about it here. No question, their most underrated album, and most mellow.
it is a song about stealing Anita from Brian. Do you think Keith doesn't sing it, or has NEVER sung it, because he feels really bad or guilty about taking Anita from Brian?
I always felt this was the main reason. Keith acts so cold when he talks about BJ today, but I think deep down he feels guilty for what he did, and this is his way of covering up the fact. He acts like he doesn't care when deep down he does. Just remember back in '69 and the stories on how Keith was towards Brian near the end, it was Keith who insisted Brian get a big chunk of money when he left, and Keith who was the one checking up on him and making sure he was okay. You got to remember they were best friends for several years and no question, he felt bad for what he did. I think the reason he wrote the song CDA is a direct reflection of that and what his feelings are, just take the title alone, "Coming Down Again", he's feeling down for what he did. Then the lyrics, "Slipped my tongue in someone else's pie" where he's admitting to what he did, he stole his best friend's girl. So yes, he doesn't feel like revisiting all of that while up on stage singing. But, I believe the other reason why this song is never sung is because Mick sang the main choirs with him, and that extra vocal is needed live, and as we all know, Mick leaves the stage and takes his break (along with half the audience) when Keith sings his 2 songs. This ins't a song that Keith wants to sing alone.
Everyone here has been so downtrodden about no new material coming from the boys, yet when they put out One More Shot and Doom and Gloom, both songs finished near the TOP of the list for songs that you didn't want to hear... I would be a little hesitant to put out something new if I saw that the die hard fans didn't want to hear it!
This is exactly what I was saying way back after the Stones released ABB. Even though most here liked it, the same minority of Gassers kept putting the album down big time here, and daily, and back then I noted that the Stones were't going to feel like working on a new album in the future if it looked like most fans hated what they had just put out. ABB was an album that was pure modern day Stones, with some hints from their past, and it appeared their hard nosed fans disliked it (even if that wasn't really the case). So what has happened now, 10 years later?... Not one new studio albums from them in all of this time. Too bad, because the only thing the Stones still do today and what I still love about them, is when they put out their new music. Live shows? I've seen this old, not as great version of the Stones live, and without MT, I have no desire to see them again for the very high price they charge. Plus once the 16 or so songs are played and the 2 hours are up, that's it, whereas with a new album, you have that forever and can play it 20 years from now and still get excited over it, just like we feel today about all of their old albums. So with the Stones today, I would prefer a new studio LP over a live show any day, you get a lot more for your money that way.
