About a year before the plane crash (and I know you know this), one of the guitarists, it could have been Collins again, hit an oak tree while driving drunk and totaled his brand new car. The song 'That Smell" was in part about this and contains the lyric "oak tree you're in my way".
It was Gary Rossington.
I didn't know that Leon Wilkeson died of substance abuse, thought it was something else.
The circumstances of his death are somewhat mysterious, but in the end it boils down to substance abuse.
