Sticky Fingers/Queen/Concept LPs/The End

It’s time for week 817 of our Stones poll, and this week’s question is:Will you buy the new reissued Sticky Fingers album when it comes out? We all by now have heard of this news and how the album will be reissued with added versions of a few songs on the album, and also some live cuts, depending on how much money you wish to spend.

So how does this reissue sound to you and do you think it’s worth the cost to replace the Sticky Fingers you already have? To let us know, you can go here and vote: Stones Weekly Poll

In last week’s Stones poll we asked: None of the Stones original songs listed in this week’s poll have ever been played live by the band. Pick the one you want to hear the most on the new tour: Well there must be many Stones fans who are interested in this new US tour, that or everybody last week just loved the question being asked, but whatever it was, for the first time ever, our Stones poll surpassed the 600 vote mark! Strange that this poll, which always does well each week in total votes cast, was the only weekly poll here at the domain which had never seen the 600 mark before. But yes, a record number of votes came in for a question that I never expected such numbers from.

Anyway, the poll results were close and I can see that fans are interested in hearing many songs not played yet. Hope the Stones get wind of this poll and take notice. The top 4 songs that fans wish to hear on this new tour were: “Jigsaw Puzzle” (8.5%), was tied with “Time Waits for No One” tonight until the last 10 minutes or so of voting, and then somebody voted for “Time Waits For No One”, putting it on top, with 8.6% of the vote. Third place went to “2000 Man” (7.8%), followed by Keith’s number “Coming down Again” (7.6%). To see where the other songs landed, just click on this link: Stones Weekly Poll - week 816 . Since this poll was so well received, I’m thinking of asking another tour question next week.

Now to the Classic Rock Poll, where it’s week 459, and as usual, we will vote in 2 different polls for the week. In the first poll we continue for the third week, to ask a question about the different members of rock bands. That question is worded in this way for this week: Who was or is the most underrated member of Queen?

I don’t think I have to say too much about this great little band from the UK. But if you don’t know them that well, you can go : here to read their bio, which I wrote on them many years ago.

To make your pick for the most underrated member of Queen, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

In this week’s VS poll instead of placing 2 songs up against each other, we will do this with 2 albums, so the new question is: Tommy, by the Who vs The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, by David Bowie, which concept album tells the best story?

First, notice that the question is not asking you for your favorite album out of the 2, nor the one that has the better music, it simply asks which album tells a better story overall. Now be it, these 2 albums tell 2 totally different stories, but that don’t matter, we just want to know which story is the better of the two?

Tommy was the fourth studio album made by the The Who, a double album, it was first released in May, 1969. The original album was a big hit and sold 20 million copies, and it has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. The album was mostly composed by Pete Townshend and given the fancy title of being a "rock opera", but the truth was, it was really just another rock concert album. It tells the story about a deaf, dumb and blind boy, who became that way after witnessing his father killing his mother's lover, and how he became a "pinball wizard" as he grew up. "Fiddle About" and "Cousin Kevin" were the only two songs on Tommy not written by Townshend, but by John Entwistle. Entwistle wrote the songs after Townshend had the rest of the album finished but was stuck in writing these 2 last songs, one that he wanted written about Tommy's cousin Kevin, who tortures the boy, and the other about Tommy's pedophile uncle, Erine, who molests the boy (who, by the time the movie was made, was changed and became instead a homosexual uncle who sexually attacks him as a young adult). According to Entwistle, Townshend couldn't come up with the right lyrics to describe these two crazy relatives and what they did to Tommy, so he asked Entwistle to finish up writing these 2 last songs for him. Entwistle noted that "Cousin Kevin" was entirely written by him and easy to write, since it was about a true life experience that he had to endure as a child, with a kid who lived across the street from him, whom his parents force him to hang out with, and who was very cruel to him.

The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, the album's official name but often shorten to Ziggy Stardust, was the fifth studio album by David Bowie, released in 1972, and which is based on a story of a fictional, bisexual alien rock superstar named Ziggy Stardust, who comes to a dying Earth which only has 5 years of life left on it, and Ziggy comes down to help get the kids through it all. But according to Bowie, Ziggy Stardust isn’t the extraterrestrial "Starman" that he sings about early on in the album at all, but merely the star man's earthly messenger instead. The LP peaked at No. 5 in the UK and No. 75 in the States on the Billboard Music Charts, and Bowie toured as Ziggy Stardust and would play the entire album live for about a year’s time after its release.

So, 2 very interesting albums to do battle with each other, which one do you feel tells the better story? To cast your vote in this week’s VS poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll we asked: Who was the most underrated member of Fleetwood Mac? This poll wasn’t like the other ones we ran asking this same question for 2 reasons. First, there were 16 different official members of this band to choose from, far more than the usual 4 or 5 members per band. Second was the final results from this question. Normally, the top pick is usually the bass player or drummer, and not one of the frontman of the group. But last week, yes, one of the lead singers of the group was chosen in the voting, along with the second and third place picks also were frontman from the band’s past. These 3 were: Christine McVie (Keyboards, vocals, songwriter) at 26.2%; Bob Welch (Guitars, vocals, songwriter) with 22.1%; and the band’s founder, Peter Green (Guitars, vocals, harp, songwriter) 21.7%. The rest of the band members finished way down below these 3, and I must say, often I disagree with our final results, but with these first 3 picks, I totally agree!

To see the full, final results from this poll, click on: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 458. Plus the top pick for this poll can be found at our Top Ten List (Page 11) along with those chosen from the other bands that we voted on already.

In last week’s VS poll, we asked: 'Lola' (by the Kinks) vs 'Rebel Rebel' (by David Bowie), which song about a transgender person is better? I just knew before this poll even started, that this one would be a very close vote indeed…… but boy was I dead wrong! One of the 2 songs – the one I didn’t vote for, took an early lead and never looked back. Which song was that? You can go here to the Classic Rock VS Poll week 458, to find out. You can also check out the final results at the VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

Last but not least is our Beatles’ poll, where it’s week 212 and we have a brand new question for you to answer, which asks: The next to final, closing lyrics to the Beatles' song 'The End', which repeat over and over again, are?... Then listed in the voting booth are 4 choices. Yes, we have talked about this here at Gasland in the past, and I’ve gotten in several emails from Beatle fans reading the Misheard Lyrics page at the domain’s Classic Rock site, and everybody seems to think they are singing any of the choices listed. But most fans agree that the sing-a-long begins with 'Love you, love you", and after that, as the lyrics start to repeat over and over, that's where just what is being sung is disputed. So what do you think is being sung? I did include a YouTube link to the song in the voting booth (and above too), it is a very short song, so you might wish to give it another listen before you vote.

To vote this week’s Beatles poll, just use this link: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Beatle poll we asked: What's your favorite lyrics from a Beatles song? (Part 5 of 5) Ah yes, the longest multiweek Beatle’s poll ever run and, just like at the Stones poll, we also went over the 600 mark at this poll last week, although for this poll it wasn’t the first time, nor a record, which is strange, since the Beatles poll usually lags behind the Stones poll in voter count most weeks, but when a good question is asked, a lot more folks vote.

No question this 5 part question was very popular, and even with over 600 votes cast, we almost had a tie in the end for first place. In fact, around 2am Gasland time Friday night, when I check the results, there was, get this, a 4 way tie for first place and the next 6 spots after that saw only 2 votes spreading them, so we had the top 10 different choices with a gap of only 3 votes between all of them! I’m sure happy things did spread out just a bit by tonight, and enough change for a winning lyric to emerge. That lyric, with only 5.3% of the vote, was : “Picture yourself in a boat on a river, with tangerine trees and marmalade skies, somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly, a girl with kaleidoscope eyes ”, written by John Lennon of course. Out of the top 10 picks, where 11 lyrics were chosen, Lennon wrote 9 of them, with Paul McCartney writing the other 2. .

To see how all of the lyrics finished, just go to Beatle’s Weekly Poll – week 211 to find out. You can also see the top 5 picks at the Beatles Miscellaneous list page.

Well I could close this all out saying the very same thing I stated for the last 3 weeks of this weekly poll post when wishing all of you a good upcoming week, you know, how it’s so warm here and cold back east, and yes, it was in the 60s again today, but I don’t wish to sound like I’m rubbing it in to those of you who aren’t seeing such warm weather, but I tell ya what, I’m starting to forget what falling snow looks like, and what the cold feels like! LOL! You all have a great week ahead, and thanks so much for your votes, especially in the Stones and Beatles polls last week!
