Bob was alone in the car and wasn't wearing a seat belt. It's unclear yet what caused the crash but he may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
You're right Manny, a very high mortality rate:
Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines: killed in the plane crash of October 20, 1977. Also killed was Steve's sister, Cassie, one of three female back-up singers the band used.
Allen Collins: died 1990 of pneumonia. Keno, his car didn't hit a tree, it ran off the road and ended up in a ditch. Someone I know who was friends with Allen is convinced that he wasn't the one driving the car, and he makes a pretty good case. Unfortunately, it's all moot now.
Leon Wilkeson: died 2001 of substance abuse (let's call a spade a spade here.)
Billy Powell: died 2009 of a heart attack.
Jo Jo Billingsley (back-up singer): died 2010 of cancer.
Bob Burns: died April 3, 2015 at 11:56 PM in a one-car crash.
Still with us: Gary Rossington, who's been in and out of hospitals for the last two years or so, with undisclosed illnesses; Artimus Pyle, who is doing fine and playing with his band; Ed King, who had a heart transplant about two years ago; and back-up singer Leslie Hawkins who is doing fine and is very involved in animal protection.
