I was in San Francisco when Jerry Garcia died - I never saw them, thought their music was OK, but didn't really float my boat. Anyway, the outpouring of love and grief in the days that followed was astounding - people from all over the country headed for the City, a counseling center in the City offered free bereavement counseling to the fans (I can't think of any other city in the world that would demonstrate so much compassion), and there was an amazing celebration of his life in Golden Gate Park - I was flying home that evening, but my friend Eve and I went (I have lots of photos in memory of that day), lots of shamanic drumming, lots of shamanic dancing, lots of counterculture people celebrating life - and of course the people who knew Jerry Garcia relating to the audience from the stage (somehow that didn't seem as important as the life being celebrated by everyone in the park). Sure Jerry Garcia was an excellent guitarist, but he symbolised so much more - that was way beyond the drugs.
