RE: RE: RE: RE: Mick Taylor Quotes

NB - >I liked Charlie's quote. What I find ironic though, is that what he says about Ronnie ("musically he didn't bring anything but he has the facility to add to things") could easily be applied to Mick T. MT had this virtuoso guitar thing going on, and the STones gave him a great vehicle to showcase his talents. Their songs provided him a framework to be heard.<

Well what I got from the Charlie quote was MT is a virtuoso at guitar and he helped "create" unique music with the Stones, and Brian and Ronnie were/are not virtuoso guitar players. Yet both Brian and Ronnie could add things with their ability to play a variety of instruments. Charlie started out by saying the MT period was a high point in the band for creativity and musical "credibility".

>Their songs provided him a framework to be heard.<

Yes and no. Yes, MT, could take a Stones song created before he "got there" and create some tasty solos which were not previously "there". Yes he created better with the Stones than in his solo career, but he also wrote songs with Jagger on IORR, when Keith had little to no songwriting input on some of those songs. He received no writing credit for those songs with his "close friend" Jagger. That is when the rift between Jagger and MT began as far as MT is concerned. Rightly or wrongly, MT felt betrayed by this, and Jagger felt betrayed by MT quitting the band and talking about the slight of songwriting credits for years later.

>One of the reasons I haven't bothered to make records of my own is because I don't get paid for some of the biggest selling records of all time. Frankly, I was ripped off<

I'll grant you that is a poor excuse for not making your own albums when you would most certainly receive writing credits on your own solo albums.

Reading between the lines just slightly it appears Mick Taylor felt like an outsider most of the time he was a Rolling Stone. He was much younger than the rest of the Stones. The environment of hanger ons always around who did not seem to get along with him probably had him feeling isolated much of the time. He was in the group but did not feel a part of the band. Likely treated as the young kid even though talent wise he was not only on a par he was a virtuoso. Then finally he finds a friend in Jagger. They co write songs together in the studio but MT gets no credit in the end. I guess that was the last straw for him.

He was in The Rolling Stones but he didn't feel a true part of the band. Part of it was likely he was far more on the introvert side back then than today. Part of it was the Glimmer Twins protecting their financial side of the band, and the age difference with MT.

Certainly the decision to quit the band was Taylor's decision alone. Financially it was a poor decision. No question about it. But reading between the lines Mick Taylor had not been happy in the band for sometime. That may sound hard to believe, but I can understand it. He felt like an outsider, and treated like a kid, when he knew he was an important part of the band back then. Living in motels like that all the time is tough on anyone. His marriage was on the rocks, he knew he was a helluva a guitar player and when he finally thought he would get some credit for creating music with the Stones he felt he got stabbed in the back by Jagger.

For some peace of mind, he left the band.
