I remember reading about him when I was about 12 years old. One of those paperbacks you ordered at school that arrived weeks later. The book was something like, 'NFL Heroes', by Ron Zimmerman. I may be way off on the title and the author but I can still see that book in my mind. It had stories on about twelve great NFL players of the past, and I remember being really impressed by this guys toughness. He went both ways, playing Center and Middle Linebacker. At Middle Linebacker he was the Dick Butkus of his era. He was the guy who ended Frank Gifford's playing career after a particularly vicious hit on Gifford. The guy was a fierce hitter and all the while he was going both ways! Yet get this, I remember the story starting out with him drinking coffee and having a cigarette before an Eagles game! Times were different back then!
R.I.P. to one of the toughest guys to ever play the game.
