Mick Taylor is super-talented. Unfortunately, I think he was making some bad decisions back then...and how could you blame him. He was obviously very younger than the rest of the Stones, and not as hardened to the music biz yet. And while he was probably the best guitarist in the band, he was, in a sense "in over his head." Add to that the stress of marital problems and a pending divorce...anyone whose been through a divorce (myself included) knows how that can impact your decision-making. It certainly doesn't help.
So I give the guy a lot of credit, but like I Said, his decision making at the time wasn't good for whatever reason...and walking out on the Stones was certainly a poor decision.
I liked Charlie's quote. What I find ironic though, is that what he says about Ronnie ("musically he didn't bring anything but he has the facility to add to things") could easily be applied to Mick T. MT had this virtuoso guitar thing going on, and the STones gave him a great vehicle to showcase his talents. Their songs provided him a framework to be heard.
What I dispute is the MT quote:
"One of the reasons I haven't bothered to make records of my own is because I don't get paid for some of the biggest selling records of all time. Frankly, I was ripped off."
That's crap, if you ask me. If you have the skills and you are an artist, then write songs and perform them. Blaming the Stones for a fairly lackluster solo career is a copout. I'm just not buying it. Doesn't take away from what he did with the Stones, and I'm a huge fan of his contributions, especially on Exile. But he left of his own accord, and that was his decision.
