For me the tough considerations are ZZ Top, CCR, Aerosmith, Skynyrd, Alice Cooper, Van Halen, and last but not least, The Beach Boys. As far as absolute classic American rock' n roll, The Beach Boys have the songs. They are the one band that truly belongs to America and defines an era, yet are timeless. Every American should be extremely proud to have the Beach Boys. They are really their Beatles in many ways, in terms of pop-culture. Their songs have a very vicarious affect and are so associated with fun-in-the sun it's phenomenal. The things that holds them back in my personal faves is they just don't have great albums, their carrier really suffered after '66, and they never developed properly.
So, that brings me to CCR. They are another band that had a similar impact on pop-culture, and as The Beach Boys, they picked right up at the start of an era and found their way into so many speakers. Much like The Beach Boys, their music has become so associated to the era, yet are timeless. An edge for CCR is that their albums as a whole are more consistent than The Beach Boys.
In terms of longevity and overall constancy, It really comes down to three bands. Although Aerosmith first 5 albums are good to great, I still prefer Van Halen's 7 albums with Roth. But for me its ZZ Top that gets me every time. Rio Grand Mud, Tres Hombres, Fandango, Tejas, and Dequello, are excellent 70s classic rock albums that are drenched in American blues. The quirky El Loco, the mighty Eliminator, and the poppy Afterburner proved they could stay relevant and infuse their grooves into the 80s sound; more so, lead what could be done with the new technology and produce some really great music. Their RCA years found them returning to their tougher sound.
