RE: The Greatest American Band In History? nsc

I would have to include the Beach Boys as strong contenders. Even before anyone had heard of the Beatles, they were rock & roll's first and only self-contained unit, meaning they wrote original songs on which they played and sang, with arrangements and studio production provided by leader Brian Wilson. They were a non-stop hit machine from '62 through '67, and in concert also self-contained as a 5-piece. If you've ever watched their complete performance from the late '64 TAMI show (seems like another famous band put in an appearance as well!), they were no slouch as live performers either. Eventually Wilson brought in more studio musicians as the musical arrangements got more complex, but it was still under his creative control. "Rubber Soul" influenced "Pet Sounds" which in turn inspired some of the songs on "Sgt. Pepper", "She's Leaving Home" especially.
