RE: RE: mom...i joined the club...nsc

Yeah I remember having to go through all the burial stuff for my Mum. She died at 1 p.m. on a Friday - the Jewish Burial Society closes for Shabbat at 1 p.m. Friday (made me laugh - I always had to go that extra mile to prove to her that I cared), and she had to be buried within 48 hours. Early that morning I got a call and when I arrived at the hospital around 6 a.m. I was told it was a false alarm!!! Sat with her for a while and someone (her 1st cousin's Dad) came in to take her away - I didn't recognise him but had his U.S. passport photo so knew him from that - was bizarre that I actually moved my chair to give him space (beings from spirit world don't need that, LOL). Was about to go to Dad to make lunch for us when I got the call that she'd passed, drove to Dad, he couldn't face going to the hospital, so I had to leave him alone in the house. Anyway, I eventually got the death certificate around 2 p.m., drove to the registry office - they asked if I had an appointment, I said no and he started looking in the diary for NEXT WEEK!!!! I said "I'm Jewish, Mum has to be buried before Monday". I went upstairs to wait - there was a trio of folk chatting and a husband and wife with a baby, and all alone me (so what's new?). Suddenly I let out a massive wail - the young couple vanished as fast as lightening and the trio asked what was wrong. They were shocked that I was there doing all that by myself so rapidly. Well, I saw someone, got a release certificate for her body to be removed from the hospital to the burial ground, and made an appointment for the following week to complete the rest of the paperwork. Got back to Dad who was beside himself with grief, and got through to an after hours person from the burial society so I left a message for them to call me 1st thing Sunday morning. Got the call 8.30 a.m. Sunday and the funeral was at 2.30 p.m. that day. I remember going to pick up the prayer books and chairs from the synagogue, also calling for food to be delivered and the man saying that I shouldn't be doing that, someone should be doing it for me - that pushed me to tears again, because there was no-one else to do anything. Anyway, the Rabbi was impressed with me because he knew I wasn't religious and I'd asked him for advice on things - like making sure Mum's eyes were closed and the window was open for her soul to leave (I didn't like to say she'd already left hours earlier!!!). They say as we live so shall we die.
