Yeah, I did misunderstand the question, and I like the one I mistook it for better.... So this question is more of a 'who within any band is the most gifted guitarist, drummer, etc'... We have asked that question in the past, but not for within bands only.
I think one has to really know a lot of bands deep to answer that, since we have to look at all bands. It would be easier to answer for me if the answer included solo artists, but again, for a band you got to know each member well. Queen would still be one of those up there I would say. Freddie was trained to play classical piano and is very good at it. The entire band is that way and Brian May and John Deacon have handmade their own instruments; you got to be pretty good to do that. But I guess you aren't asking for one band as a whole unit, so do you still count Rush?
I would say, on a side note, that it takes more talent to play any string instrument than the keys, so a good keyboardist is not as important to a band as a good guitarist is. Once you learn the keyboard, you can play to a point any instrument like that, and the drums are even more easier to play. More people play those instruments than play string instruments. One can learn to play a mean guitar, and most guitarists can play bass, too. But move on from there and how many can play a sitar, or any of those other Indian string instruments? Look at Keith Richards, he's very honest on this, he's a great guitarist, but he rarely plays other stringed instruments and has flat out said he isn't that good in playing them, so he doesn't. So my guess is the person we're looking for has to play guitar, since that's the main string instrument played in rock music.
