What about Cream? They were simply the best in terms of technical mastery, but for some reason they get less and less airtime these days on my playback devices. The original Paul Butterfield line-up was awesomely tight. And Love and Moby Grape were both known for exquisite play, at least at first. These days? Radiohead are up there. So are Jack White's backing musicians. And while nobody puts on a more exhilarating show in terms of all-around excitement than the Stones and/or Arcade Fire they don't measure up in pure playing prowess.
