RE: Which Band?

I'm probably not qualified to answer this at all, because I don't care if someone's technically a "good" musician or not, so long as I get what they're doing and I like it.

But of the bands I've seen, Yes and Roxy Music seemed to be the most competent musicians. I'd give the nod to Yes because of Rick Wakeman. I think most of the guys in Yes, if not all, read music and could have probably written their songs the old way, by writing what they hear in their head and going from there. Certainly Wakeman was capable of that, and I'm pretty sure Steve Howe, too.

As much as I find Jimmy Page to be a pretty dull guitar player for the most part, he did an amazing amount of session work, and I would have to assume he can read music, which means he understands pitch, key and melody and can come in and do his part in quick fashion.

King Crimson may be great musicians but I can't listen to them.

Zappa around the time of Overnight Sensation and Apostrophe had really put together a tight band. They were pretty unreal. James Brown always had a first rate band, too.
