Foxygen (ssc)

My son is very much into all different kinds of music, and he'll burn cd's of songs from different bands for me occasionally. He has great taste (he digs The Stones), and I've discovered many bands that I would never have found on my own.

One day I was playing one of these cd's, and a song came on by the band Foxygen while our family was talking. I wasn't really paying too much attention to the song, it was more like background music while we were all chatting. Anyway, this song is playing and after a while it suddenly it got my attention. The part that got my attention went by fast, but just after this part changed I interrupted everyone and said "this sounds like The Stones". The song had changed at this point, and now it sounded nothing like The Stones so they're probably all thinking I'm crazy.

Well, a few days go by, and the song comes on again. I pointed it out immediately, because to me it's so recognizable. Have a listen and see if you know which Stones song I think it sounds like. I'm certain that most everyone will get it right away.

Fast forward about a year, and my wife and I are listening to another cd and a song came on that we both immediately said sounded a lot like Todd Rundgren. We didn't know for sure, but we both thought it might be Foxygen, and our son confirmed that it was.

Several months later while we were up one night, we decided to check youtube to see if they had any videos, and we found the one for the new song. Have a listen, and see if you think it sounds like Todd Rundgren, Also, check out the dance moves from the lead singer, there's no doubt he copped some moves from Mick.

After we checked out a few videos, for some reason I was led to a weikepedia page on them, and I saw this quote on their page:

"The Entertainment Weekly staff wrote, "We just can't stop playing the scruffy psych-rock duo's Rolling Stones-obsessed album with the appropriately exuberant title We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic."[6] In January 2013, Pitchfork Media cited Foxygen under "Best New Music" in their review of the new album.[7] Their 2014 album, the Todd Rundgren-influenced ...And Star Power received decidedly mixed reviews."

Anyway, I'm a fan of this band now. It has been said that imitation is the greatest form of flattery, and I agree in this case. I think it's great to see The Stones influence in some of today's music.
