John Petkovic is a singer of limited range, but he knows his limits and works well within them. He's also the singer for Cobra Verde and Sweet Apple and he's a guitar player. For a fun fact, Petkovic also writes for the Cleveland Plain Dealer about places to go in Cleveland.
Anyway, he also plays guitar. He started DoS when he was a teenager and he had a job at a restaurant called The Ground Round. Those were all over Cleveland, and they had like 100 things on the menu (literally) and that meant families went there because anyone could find something to eat there. The food generally sucked, but with an atmosphere with 75 kids, what would you expect? Anyway they would have entertainers at these places. Usually a clown or a guy with a guitar. When Petkovic's manager went on vacation, Petkovic's band, Death of Samantha, played at the Ground Round he worked at. Needless to say, he lost his job as at their first gig they wee jumping on tables, playing way too loud and generally being obnoxious. They have played with a Ground Round restaurant sign behind them.
So, they're actually kind of Ohio Rock Royalty. Some of the members formed into Cobra Verde, They went on to become Robert Pollard's backing band for a much loved version of Guided By Voices. The version of that song I chose is the original, so it's really kind of a Cleveland, art meets Punk kind of thing that works best live. That's why I really prefer the versions of most of their songs on the If Memory Serves Us Well album, which is a run through of their setlist and it's one tight, rocking record. Doug Gillard is a dynamite guitar player and has played with almost everyone in the Indie/Alternative music scene.
And yes! You get a cookie and a gold star! Death of Samantha is most definitely named after the song you mentioned.
