Undercover/acoustic guitar/VS/Fab lyrics

Week 808 of the Stones poll is here and it’s time to once again start us up with the Stones album vs Stones album polls, and this week we will return to this series of questions with the “Undercover Polls”. Undercover was released by the band in 1983, and although not a favorite LP of theirs, overall it is liked by us fans. The album consisted of 9 new songs, which was an average number of new songs for an LP back in those days. I think most fans would agree that the song “Undercover of the Night” is the best cut on this LP, with “She Was Hot” another fan favorite, and Keith’s Beatles like sounding “Wanna Hold You” perhaps even better. Then there were other songs on this one that were flat out strange, like “Too Much Blood”, which Mick talks about a real life cannibal, but I don’t think most fans wanted to be hear about that nutjob.

So, let’s get our first week of the Undercover Polls under way now by asking this question:

vs.

Undercover vs The Rolling Stones, Now!, which album do you like the best? The Rolling Stones, Now! was release in 1965 and was their third American LP. Packed with 12 tracks, with 7 of the songs coming from their second UK album, Rolling Stones #2. The cover "Little Red Rooster", along with "Heart of Stone" were perhaps the 2 favorites on this one, and "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love", another fan favorite - in its long version, unfortunately was shorten down on this album from over 5 minutes long on RS2, to less than 3 minutes on RSN, which totally sucked!

So which LP do you dig more? To vote, just click on here: Stones Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Stones poll we asked: Rate the artwork for the front cover of Shine A Light . This live LP did pretty well in the voting, with a top pick of ‘7’, with 26.6% of the vote.

Over at the Classic Rock Poll it’s week 450, and we’ll again run the usual 2 polls per week. For the first poll, a new and very interesting multi-part question will be asked: What's the best acoustic guitar(s) heard in a Rock song? (Part 1 of 7) Yes you read that right, a 7 part poll question, something I’ve never run here before (we did 6 parts maybe 3 times in the past), in part because it takes too many weeks to get through. But our voters seem to love these multipart polls regardless, and this question is a dandy, I just never ran it since I knew there would be too many songs and guitarists to list. At first I came up with over 200 poll choices, which was way too much, that would have been about a 10 part poll, so I cut the list down to 165 choices. Looking for the best acoustic guitar songs took longer to complete than any poll I’ve ever run, taking about 3 months’ time to do (working around 2 hours a week on average), but damn it was a fun job. I had it all finished and ready to go in early December, but with the holidays and then the multi part falsetto polls, it seemed like forever to finally get to this question!

This poll will be run in the usual way, the top songs chosen from each of the first 5 parts will go up against each other in Part 6. How many songs taken from each part will depend on how the voting turns out, but I’m thinking the top 5 or 6 will make the cut as long as they get at least 5% of the vote each, but we shall see.

Now try to remember, do not pick your favorite song from the list, we aren’t looking for that, we want what you think is the best acoustic guitar played only. To see Part 1’s list and vote in this week’s first Rock poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

In this week’s VS poll the question asks: 'Come Together' (original by The Beatles) vs 'Come Together' (cover by Aerosmith), which version of this song is best? Week 2 of placing a Beatle song up against a cover of the same Beatle song.

'Come Together' is of course the opening track on the Fab’s Abbey Road LP. Written by John Lennon as a campaign song for his friend Timothy Leary, who was running for governor of California against Ronald Reagan. But Leary ended up getting busted for marijuana and went to prison instead. The song was part of a double A side single with "Something", and it went to #1 on the US charts, while only reaching #4 in the UK, where it was banned by the censor happy BBC from airplay, first because of the lyrics talking street slang about shooting up cocaine (using "coca-cola" instead of "cocaine"), but they also banned it just in case John was writing about the drink, Coca-Cola (he wasn't), as that was also against the crazy UK rules of product placement. Seems that singing about drug taking, or about commercial products, are both not allowed on the BBC.

Aerosmith recorded their cover of the song in 1978 and it appeared in the movie and on the soundtrack to the film Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Their cover single was a hit and it went to #23 on the top 40 charts. A different, live version of the song appeared on a live album of theirs in the early 1980s. They still sometimes play the song live even today.

So which version will you go with? To cast your vote in this week’s VS poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll we asked: What is the best falsetto sung in a rock song? (Part 4 of 4) We had a nice response to this poll and voting couldn’t had been any closer, with the top 21 choices being only 14 votes apart! I’ve never seen a final poll result ever as close as this one while involving so many songs, although this poll also had the largest number of choices ever for a multipart finial poll to begin with, with a total of 35 choices. But the top pick ended up being “Jay Siegel, Mitch Margo on the Tokens 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight', with 5.4% of the vote. A great choice, even if it wasn’t what I voted for. Second place was a tie between “Barry Gibb on The Bee Gees's 'Stayin' Alive', and ‘Mick Jagger on The Stones' 'Emotional Rescue', with 4.7% each.

To see the full, final results, click on: Classic Rock VS Poll week 449. The top 10 from this poll will also be listed at the: Top Ten Lists Page 11.

Last week in our VS poll we asked: 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' (original by The Beatles) vs 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' (cover by Elton John), which version of this song is best? Both versions of this song were hits, but you wouldn’t have known it going by the finale poll results. To see those results, click on: Classic Rock VS Poll week 449. You can also check out the final results at the VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

We finish up here with the Beatles’ poll, where it’s week 203, and the question asks: Which Beatles song listed has the best lyrics? (Part 2 of 4) . Part 2 will be run just like Part 1 was, but damn, this part of the alphabet for Beatle song titles has some great written tunes to consider.

To make your pick and vote in Part 2 of this poll, just click on: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Beatle poll we asked: Which Beatles song listed has the best lyrics? (Part 1 of 4) 6 songs got enough votes to make it to Part 4, the first 4 were written by Lennon, then one each by George and Paul, here they are: A Day in the Life (35.4%); Happiness is a Warm Gun (9.8%); Across The Universe (9.6%); Help! (9.4%), Here Comes The Sun (9.4%); Elenor Rigby (9.1%).

On average, most of you who read my weekly poll post – never vote in any of the polls; and even if the poll numbers do grow a bit each week, it would be great to see more of you taking part. After all, if you read all the way down to here, you must have some interest in these polls, right? So why not join the rest of us and have a say in how these polls turn out by voting right now? It’s fun, free, and easy to do, and takes only seconds to cast your vote! So please – go vote! As usual, a big “thank you” to those of you who do vote each week!
