SAL/falsetto4/LSD/Fab lyrics

Week 807 of the Stones poll has arrived and this week’s new question asks: Rate the artwork for the front cover of Shine A Light

This was the soundtrack to The Stones concert film of the same name, released on April 1, 2008. This live album’s cover had broken up photos of each Stone playing live, put all together to look like one photo of the band playing together. So what do you think of it?

To rate this album cover, just click on here: Stones Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Stones poll we asked: Rate the artwork for the front cover of No Security . This live LP's cover did well in the voting, with the top pick being what is usually looked at as an average rating, that being ‘7’, although with a high percentage of 33.1%, that places it at the top of the list for albums that also received a top rating of 7, on our rating list.

Now to the Classic Rock Poll, where it’s week 449, and we’ll again run the usual 2 polls per week. For the first question we’ll ask: What is the best falsetto sung in a rock song? (Part 4 of 4) Usually when we run a final part of a multiple week poll like this, for one with 4 parts to it, in Part 4 I like to have somewhere around 20 choices listed from the top picks from the first 3 parts. That usually means somewhere like 6 or 7 choices from each poll, as long as the choices received at least 5% each of the vote. But for this question, other than in Part 2, where 8 songs made the final part, in Parts 1 and 3, there were so many ties for the last spot in each part, that we ended up with 14 choices from Part 1, and another 13 choices from Part 3, making for the largest number of choices to choose from in a final part poll ever, at 35 choices! Gosh, that’s enough to break up into another 3 weeks of polling, but no, we aren’t going to do that, or we would never get this question over with if we went that route, and the final part is just that, the ending to all of this. So yes, there are a much larger number of choices to be made than usual, but you’ve already seen all of these before and have had 3 weeks to think about this, so hopefully it won’t be too hard to pick out one choice for the best falsetto sung in a rock song.

To see the final list and vote in this week’s first Rock poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

In this week’s VS poll the question asks: 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' (original by The Beatles) vs 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' (cover by Elton John), which version of this song is best? This Beatle original written by John Lennon , was released in June of 1967, and its title came from John’s son Julian, who came home from nursery school one day with a drawing that he told his father was called 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’, with Lucy being a schoolmate of his. John loved the title and was inspired to write a song around it, and as it turned out, as John imagined the song in his head, he ended up thinking of images that were from the classic “Alice In Wonderland” story , and, in coping the next bit from Wikipedia so I don’t have to type it all out here, he said: "I had read and admired the works of Lewis Carroll, and the title of Julian's drawing reminded me of a passage in there from 'Through the Looking Glass' in which Alice floats in a 'boat beneath a sunny sky.' So in turn, he drew on some of the images in Carroll's story when he wrote the lyrics to the song. Of course, the lyrics Lennon came up with were so far-out that fans immediately felt the song was about LSD, since John was into the drug at the time. Plus fans saw the initials of L S D spelled out in the title. Lennon noted more than once, that the "LSD" in the title was nothing but a coincidence. Years later Paul McCartney claimed the song was still about LSD, but Lennon always denied this and stuck to the same story that he told about his son and the “Alice in Wonderland” story. But anyway, the song, as you might remember, became one of the Beatles favorite songs ever, and one of the first songs fans think of when they think of great Beatle songs written by John.

Elton John’s cover of this song was released in 1974 and featured John Lennon on backing vocals and guitar. Released as a single, it topped the US Billboard pop charts for two weeks (also made it to #1 up in Canada, too) making Elton John become only the second of 2 artists to have a Beatles' cover to reach #1. (Joe Cocker was the only other, with his take of "With a Little Help From My Friends" reaching #1 on the UK chart in 1969.).

So anyway, which version of this song do you like more? To cast your vote in this week’s VS poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll we asked: What is the best falsetto sung in a rock song? (Part 3 of 4) As noted up above, 13 picks scored enough votes to live on to Part 4, with 8 of them alone tying for the final spot. Those picks are: Mick Jagger on The Stones' 'Miss You' (7.7%); Alan Wilson on Canned Heat's 'On the Road Again' (6.8%), Frankie Valli on The Four Seasons' 'Sherry Baby' (6.8%); John Entwistle on the Who's 'A Quick One, While He's Away' (6.6%); John Lennon on his solo song 'One Day (At A Time)' (6.5%), Robert Plant on Led Zeppelin's 'Rock and Roll' (6.5%), and all tied with 6.3% of the vote each were: Barry Gibb on The Bee Gees's 'Jive Talkin', Dean Torrence, Brian Wilson on the Beach Boys' 'Barbara Ann', Elton John on his solo song 'Crocodile Rock', Harry Nilsson on his solo song 'Everybody's Talkin'', John Wallace on Harry Chapin's 'Taxi', Larry Henley on The Newbeats' 'Bread and Butter', and Roger Hodgson on Supertramp's 'Goodbye Stranger'.

Last week in our VS poll we asked: 'God Gave Rock And Roll To You' (original by Argent) vs 'God Gave Rock And Roll To You II (cover by KISS), which version of this song is best? We ended up with a landslide win for one of the two. To see which song got that big win and by how much, click on: Classic Rock VS Poll week 448. You can also check out the final results at the VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

Let’s close up this post with the Beatles’ poll, where it’s week 202, and the new question asks: Which Beatles song listed has the best lyrics? (Part 1 of 4) . The Beatles were known for writing very interesting lyrics, so let’s see which one was the best of the lot! The songs will be listed in alphabetical order each week with the top picks voted on again in Part 4.

To make you pick and vote in Part 1 of this poll, just click on: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Beatle poll we asked: Of the Beatles UK studio albums, which one has the best lyrics? We looked at the songs with the best lyrics last week going by album only, and really only 4 LPs were in the running from the poll’s start. Plus I must confuses, I had no clue that the top pick was going to be Rubber Soul, with 22.4% of the vote. The other 3 albums that I did expect to see in the running for first were: Revolver (at 21.7%); Abbey Road (at 21.3%), and The White Album (aka The Beatles) (at 21.1%).

To see the full results from this poll, click on: Beatle’s Weekly Poll – week 201. The top picks will also show up on The Beatles Album Page over at the Lennon site.

Thanks to all of you who voted in all four of our weekly polls last week, and for voting in this week’s 4 polls, too, and I hope all of you have a great upcoming week!
