Like every decade, there's a metric shitload of great music to discover from the 90's. For me, right off the bat I think of Uncle Tupelo. Fucking brilliant, that's what they were.
Whiskeytown. Still the best thing Ryan Adams has done. Really great albums and there's cd's with bonus tracks galore. They're like food or water to me.
The Jayhawks. Hollywood Town Hall and Tomorrow the Green Grass are so damned good. The rest of their career can be spotty, but those two records are flawless.
There's more, but that's just what I thought of right off the top of my head. I think Nirvana was pretty great, too. I liked Pearl Jam's first album but they went downhill from there.
