RE: In Eternal Pursuit Of The "Sweet Spot"

This post is earlier than I'm ready for, but since this thread appeared as it did I guess I'll respond now. 2K man: It seems we have similar tastes. I got a Sansa clip and abused it for nearly 9 years and I love it so much I just got another one (at 8GB). The freedom to click and drag and the push-button controls give it quite an edge over navigating the endlessly frustrating Itunes/Iphones. For skiing I don't even have to take it out of my pocket. But, I still have my Panasonic SL-SX500 portable CD player. It rarely gets used anymore, but it really does sound better for CDs when paired with my Grado Headphones. Apartment life, (not blasting neighbors) dictated that that set-up got a lot of use for a period of years. For cars, the stock systems have always been fine...there's maybe been 1-2 times out of thousands when I actually got to the top of the volume dial and wasn't hurting (poor quality mp3-sourced cd probably).

Which brings me to my looming stereo system acquisition. It needs to be as simple as it can get, because I don't have the time to get into any of the science. I am looking at tower floorstanding speakers: the Polk Tsi500 series (or maybe the RTiA7 series), a stereo-only reciever with a phono input hopefully (one that doesn't need an outside amp), and whatever turntable and basic cd-player will get the job done. I've never had any of this stuff. Since I'm not overly worried about the smaller parts I guess my question here, really, is whether anyone knows other brands of speakers to get that are better and/or cheaper but about in that range and whether I need a subwoofer or not. I'd rather the towers be good enough not to have to bother with a sub...
