Got Live!/Falsetto songs/Train Kept a Rollin'/Fabs

Week 805 of the Stones poll is here and this week’s new question asks: Rate the artwork for the front cover of Got Live If You Want It

We are down to rating the last 7 covers from Stones albums that we haven’t gotten to yet. This one was their first live LP, released in 1966, just don’t get this album mixed up with the live 1965 EP of the same name that was only released in the UK and had a similar but different cover of different photos of the Stones up on stage.

To cast your vote in our poll, just click on here: Stones Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Stones poll we asked: Rate the artwork for the front cover of Love You Live . Pretty much average results were seen by the time this poll finished up, with “7’ being the top pick, taking in 20.4% of the vote. Tied for second was “5” and “6” with 19.1% each. Then “4” saw another 18.7%, but after that not as many votes for the other numbers.

Next, let’s head over to the Classic Rock Poll, where it’s week 447, and we’ll again run the usual 2 polls per week. For the first question we’ll ask: What is the best falsetto sung in a rock song? (Part 2 of 4) Part 2 has another 32 excellent songs listed that contain some excellent falsetto singing in them.

The very same conditions to make the list apply to this week’s songs, and no, it really isn’t going to be easy picking just one falsetto singer out of this bunch of great songs.

To vote in this week’s first Rock poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

In this week’s VS poll we will ask: 'Train Kept a Rollin'' (by The Yardbirds) vs 'Train Kept a Rollin'' (by Aerosmith), which cover of this song is best?

This old jump blues song was written by Tiny Bradshaw and Lois Mann (aka Syd Nathan) and originally recorded by Bradshaw in 1951 and is looked at as one of the first songs to have elements of the soon to be emerging Rock music sound that was about to break out everywhere in just a few years’ time.

Many different artists have covered this song throughout the years, with The Yardbirds and Aerosmith versions being the best known, and both have interesting stories attached to them.

The Yardbirds recorded 2 different versions of this song, first in 1965 with Jeff Beck's fuzz lead guitar making for a psychedelic blues rock sound that many rock bands would soon copy. Then in 1966, the makers of the movie Blow Up wanted to have the Yardbirds in their movie playing this song in a nightclub scene. They agreed, but then they couldn’t secure the song’s right to use it in the movie, so for their movie cover they recorded an updated version with their new guitarist Jimmy Page sharing the lead with Beck, and although the music wasn’t rewritten, the song featured new lyrics written by singer Keith Relf and the song was retitled "Stroll On’, with the music more heavy and sounding more like an early heavy metal song. So "Stroll On" was included on the Blow-Up soundtrack album when it came out in 1967…. but don’t consider this version when voting, as officially it’s not the same song, go only with their 1965 cover.

Aerosmith's story with this song is even weirder. They played this song live often, even before they even cut an album; in fact they played it at their very first gig in 1970. In 1974 they recorded a 2 part version for their second album, Get Your Wings, but for whatever reasons, their 2 guitarists, Joe Perry and Brad Whitford, didn't play on the studio cut at all. Instead, guitarists Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner, who played together for both Lou Reed and Alice Cooper, played the guitar parts for them. Aerosmith at first wanted to include a live take of the song for the album, but their producer wanted a studio version instead, and no, the 2 part version that ended up on the album was not live, even if they tried to make it sound like it was, as the crowd noise you hear in the song’s middle part is actually recorded from the 1971 Concert for Bangladesh and added in by producer Jack Douglas to give it a live feel. Steve Hunter played the lead on the first part of the song, with Dick Wagner taking over the lead on the ‘fake live’ second part. Turns out that Wagner and Hunter played lead guitar on 6 of the album’s 8 songs, including the song “Same Old Song and Dance”, a song with a riff credited to Perry, even though Wagner played the riff. Again, it was never explained why any of that happened and when the LP was first released, both Wagner and Hunter weren’t even credited, fans found out who was really playing the guitars a few years later on.

So anyway, which cover version of this song do you like more? To cast your vote in this week’s VS poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll we asked: What is the best falsetto sung in a rock song? (Part 1 of 4) 14 singers/songs did very well in this polling last week, each of them taking in well over the 5% threshold of votes each needed to qualify for Part 4 of the poll. However,14 songs is way too many songs to list from any one part, so more than likely, only the top 8, or maybe top 10, will make the final cut depending on how the top songs stack up in Parts 2 and 3. There was a 3 way tie for first place as it was, those 3 choices were: Barry Gibb on The Bee Gees's 'Stayin' Alive', Brian Wilson on the Beach Boys' 'I Get Around', and Roger Taylor on Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody', all 3 saw 6.8% of the vote each. To see the full, final resutles, click on: Classic Rock VS Poll week 446.

Last week in our VS poll we asked: 'Let’s Go Get Stoned' (by Ray Charles) vs 'Let’s Go Get Stoned' (by Joe Cocker), which cover of this song is best? The results were very close all week, then this past weekend, one version took a somewhat larger lead and won. To see which cover that was, click on: Classic Rock VS Poll week 446. You can also check out the final results at the new VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

Now to the Beatles’ poll, where it’s week 200, and the new question is: Which Beatles song is too long? Perhaps you guessed this question was coming up after the question we asked last week for which Beatles song was too short. But where we had 50 short Beatle songs to list last week, this week for Beatles songs too long, well, we got only a few to vote on… 7 to be exact, and one of them really isn’t even a song. But the Beatles just didn’t record too many long songs over 5 minutes long, the reason for the short list.

Remember before you vote, the question isn’t asking for your least favorite song listed, but the song that you felt was too long and might have been better shorter. However, if you feel the reason you dislike a song is only because it’s was too long, then yes, you should vote for it for that reason.

To look at the 7 songs listed and vote in this poll, just click on: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Beatle poll we asked: Which Beatles song is too short? “Dig It”, the cool and long jam that was edited all the way down to only 50 seconds, was the runaway pick for the song too short, with 12.7% of the votes. “I Will” at 1:46, was second, taking in 10% of the vote and although this song wasn’t edited at all, many fans for many years have felt this mellow and cool ballad was too short. So I would say 2 very good picks by us fans!

Well another new week is upon is, I do hope it turns into a good one for you, and as always, thanks to all of you who vote each week in our polls!
