Now that is a great question!
I have to be honest, and I say this as one who is like everyone here - a MASSIVE FAN, and one for whom the Stones has been the soundtrack of my life.... but their legacy simply would not be what it is now. If they broke up in 1970 we would be missing a number of truly great and iconic albums. We would also not have the Stones as the #1 band in the world in term of live concert ticket sales. The Stones would not be the most commercially successful rock act in the world - some other band would claim this.
I think we would not know Mick and Keith the way we do. We have, of course, highly caricatured views of them. But we probably wouldn't have this. We wouldn't have their stories, their personalities, their traits, their foibles, committed to memory as we do now. Basically, they would not be larger than life superstars - which they are.
Now, they would still have a legacy. But it would be behind Zeppelin, The Who, Pink FLoyd, and other bands.
I think the Stones are simply brilliant in the 1960s. There is music there that I could not live without. But for them to disband in 1970 would gut their catalogue of so much great work.
