I don't think I've ever heard anybody who was there say that Muddy wasn't painting the ceiling, maybe Bill Wyman. I've read (I think) Marshall Chess saying that that just would not happen. I can't remember exactly what the point Richards was making when he said Muddy was painting the ceiling; his records weren't selling so he was put to good use doing other things, something like that?
I have read that on the day the Stones turned up at Chess Records, Muddy was involved in lugging in their gear(heavy work btw). It's possible that there were people there that day painting the place, and in Richards' recollection Muddy has become one of them. Wrong as he more than likely was about that, the point was well made. Muddy's relationship with the Chess brothers was pretty much the same as the one he had with the Stovalls back down on the plantation. Neither would let him starve, in Mississippi he got his 'furnish', and in Chicago it's equivalent in paid bills, and new cadillacs(more than paid for by royalties that should have been coming to him anyway). Did he get from either what he was due? Nowhere near. Muddy was pretty much their property, and he did what he was told. Muddy for his own reasons accepted the situation.
Big Chester was a different proposition.
