I just find it funny. I actually think Keith is very image conscious...For instance, many times when he's photographed he has to have that cig hanging from his mouth.
Keith is a chain smoker and he's been one for years, so that might explain why you often see that image in photos of him. But he isn't trying to be cool, or image conscious, he's just being himself.
2 things, I knew what I was talking about with him and his hair, it's something that not only others have said about him, but I recalled reading in an interview back in the '90s, where he flat out said he doesn't allow anybody to cut hair. I also knew he had cut other's hair and there was at least one photo to prove it, so I just went looking and it took 2 minutes to find a photo of him cutting Charlie's hair (down below) back in 1965 before a TV show appearance. Then it took another 5 minutes to find an interview on this page - http://www.nme.com/news/the-rolling-stones/27531 - where he flat out states that he cuts his own hair, but it's not the one I read in the '90s, since this one was conducted in 2007. But he notes in this interview that even when he was a boy his mother would give him money for a haircut and he would pocket the money for his own use and cut his hair himself, so even way back then he did this. But his quote from this article on his cutting his own hair is: "I would never have my hair cut by anyone except me. I’ve never had my hair cut by anybody, I do it all myself. I’ve never let anybody touch it. My mum used to give me two shillings and sixpence every two weeks to get my hair cut, and I would just ignore the barber and chop it off myself"
