One might compare this with Nixon normalizing relations with China back in the early 70's. But before Republicans get too carried away with their latest hissy fit over Cuba, they might want to recall that Nixon got a pass from them on China, despite the fact that the Vietnam War was underway and China was a major supplier to the Viet Cong and NVA. Oh well, if a Republican wants to toast commies who control the most populous nation then I guess its OK. But God forbid that we open up travel and trade with a neighboring banana republic that has been on our shit list non-stop since the days when Nikita Khrushchev was Soviet Premier.
