I was just recalling this quote when I happened across and article about Sha Na Na. I was shocked to find that they are still going. I think they've had many incarnations.
It reminded me of that line from Spinal Tap when the lead singer is asked if he will miss one of the members who has just left, and he says "you know, 37 people have been in this band".
It made me wonder which well known bands have had the most members, and the most incarnations.
It also reminded me of a story a friend of mine told me about how he went to see Jefferson Starship perofrm in the 1980s and Grace Slick was off sick for the night, making the band made up of few in any original members
