IORR/BB/Vocal samples/TSMR vs SPLHCB/George Pt 3

We enter week 801 at our Stones and this week’s question is: The It's Only Rock n Roll album cover vs the Beggars Banquet (graffiti) album cover, which cover do you like more?

What we are doing here is putting the 2 most favorite Stones albums covers that have a drawing on them, up against each other. The It's Only Rock n Roll album cover and the Beggars Banquet cover received the most votes when we ran a poll for favorite LP cover back in December of 2005, and only 4 votes separated the 2 when IORR was chosen the most liked. In that poll there were 15 albums to choose from, so let’s just pit these 2 up against each other this time and see what we end up with.

Now the music inside both albums have nothing at all to with how you vote, only vote on the cover/drawing of whichever album you like most. To vote in this poll, just click on here: Stones Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Stones poll we asked: Of the Stones songs that nobody ever talks about, which one is best? This turned out to be a fun poll to keep an eye on, as several songs were in the running and in the end, only 8 votes separated the songs that ended up in the Top 10. “Complicated” came out on top by one vote with 9.9% of the vote. Second place went to “Empty Heart” (with 9.7%), and in a shocker to me, “Laugh, I Nearly Died” ended up in third (at 9.4%). To see the full, final results, just click on this link: Stones Weekly Poll - week 800 for the final poll results.

Over at the Classic Rock Poll, it’s week 443, and we’ll be running the usual 2 poll questions for the week. With the first question we will ask this: What was the best vocal sample heard in a Rock song? I got a feeling this is going to be another fun poll to run and keep an eye on as the week goes on.

Now, since ‘vocal sample’ could mean more than one thing, we are only looking at it in regard to – for the most part – when a different singer - other than the one who is singing the lead on a song, takes over and sings the lead for only one or two lines, and that’s it. Now this singer could sing backups throughout the song, but all that matters is how they handled and sang the brief lead vocal. I do have the vocal line they sing listed with each song in the poll choices, but because of space, for many of them, only some of what is sang is listed, followed by “….” which will mean there’s more to what they sing than what’s listed…. Now, with 2 or 3 songs, we will also list and include songs where the single line is sung by the non-lead singer over and over again, but that’s all this one person sings throughout the song. Plus a few of these samples are just brief spoken words, with no singing, but they are still vocal samples.

There are 38 vocal samples on the list to choose from. To make your pick and vote, just click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

At the VS Rock poll this week we will ask: The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band LP vs. The Stones' Their Satanic Majesties Request LP, which album is better? Just a note, this is the first time we are running the Rock VS poll where we are not placing 2 songs up against each other. For the first time, we’ll have a battle between 2 albums that are similar, and I can’t think of a better 2 to get started with (another note: Yes, we have placed albums and other music topics at the Stones and Fabs VS polls, up against each other before, just not with the Rock VS polls).

Unlike this week’s Stones poll where we’re placing the LP’s covers up against each other, that isn’t what this poll is about at all, and all that matters for this poll is the music inside!

Now just like when I place a YouTube video for each song in the voting booth so you can hear the songs before you vote, I did the same thing for this set-up with the albums, since YouTube also has entire albums on their site, too. I just wanted to point out for the Beatles LP, that it’s video shows separate videos for each song on the entire album, something I had never seen before, and it’s excellent and worth watching if you never seen it and love the Beatles. But just remember we aren’t voting on any videos in the poll, just on the music inside the albums…. I had planned, after I set these YouTube links in the poll, to listen to both albums in the background yesterday afternoon while I made the family dinner, since I got great speakers on my computer. But when I checked the links, and I saw this Beatles video, well I ended up watching almost all of it (so dinner was 40 minutes late!). Just wondering if any of you know who put this video together and when, since I never seen it before and it was excellent.

Oh, one last thing, we actually did run something close to this question way back in 1999 at the Beatles poll, back in the very early days of our polls and when almost nobody ever voted. It was the first VS poll ever run (not that I had a clue at the time that the VS polls would become a regular deal here), although the poll’s choices were set up differently and the question was set up a bit different, too.

I didn’t talk here about the songs/ music inside each album, but I know I don’t have to do that, as we all know both of these albums enough…. So which of these 2 LPs do you like better? To cast your vote in this week’s VS poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll we asked: What was the worst moment in Rock history? This turned out to be a very popular question, as we saw the second highest vote count this year in this Rock poll. The top pick was a runaway choice for “John Lennon is assassinated (Dec 8, 1980)” with 15.7% of the vote. Then “The untimely deaths of: Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Keith Moon, John Bonham, Elvis, Brian Jones, Jim Morrison" placed at 6.2%. The next top 15 songs were all very close to each other in the final vote, with only 7 votes between them, and yes, lots of ties in there to check out. So to view the full, final results from this poll, just click on: Classic Rock Poll week 442. The top 10 from this poll will also be listed at the new: Top Ten Lists Page 11.

In last week’s VS poll we asked: 'Beechwood 45789' (by The Marvelettes) vs '867-5309/Jenny' (by Tommy Tutone), which song is best?. Gosh, we almost, for the third week in a row, had an ending with another 50/50 tie, as things were tied at the start of the weekend, but in the end we did have a winner. You can check to see which song came from behind early in the week to take over that first place slot late on Saturday and hold on to win in the end.

To view the results, click on: Classic Rock VS Poll week 442. You can also check out the final results at the new VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

As usual, the last poll up is the Beatles’ poll, where it’s week 196, and the question is: Of the Beatles songs to feature George on lead guitar, which one did he play best on? (Part 3 of 3) . The final week/part of this question will feature the top songs picked in Parts 1 and 2. A total of 17 songs made the list. To make your pick for the song you think George played lead on the best, just click on: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Beatle poll we asked: Of the Beatles songs to feature George on lead guitar, which one did he play best on? (Part 2 of 3) 9 songs saw enough votes to make their way into Part 3, they are: Something (10.9%); Paperback Writer (10.7%), Ticket to Ride (with Paul) (10.7%), Yer Blues (with John) (10.7%); In My Life (10.4%), I've Got a Feeling (10.4%); I've Just Seen a Face (9.8%), Rain (9.8%); She Said She Said (8%).

As usual, I thank all of you who took the time to vote both last week and this week in our polls. Since I get to spend all day tomorrow in the hospital under the knife, I will not be back in Gasland until sometime on Tuesday, so please wish me luck and think positive thoughts for me tomorrow, but no need to post your well wishes here in this poll thread, I already know you’re all on my side, but at the same time I do appreciate the positive thoughts, too. I do hate hospitals and being put under with anesthesia, but so goes life when you grow older.
