Most surprising live show for you?

Some excellent replies in the thread below about best live shows seen. The biggest difference in this crop of Gassers is about 10 years ago when I mentioned here how bad Dylan was at that one show, several Gassers could not believe he played so bad, yet a few here this time around note the same thing happening with him at their shows.

So I was also thinking, what show surprised you the most that you attended? This could include the Stones, or even a non-rock act - and the show could have been either great - or terrible.

For me that Dylan show surprised me a lot, as I had seen him before years earlier in NY and that other show was very good. But 2 shows come to mind as the most surprising. The second most surprising was seeing the Monkees at Red Rocks around 1987. I had gotten free tickets from a radio station I was working with and the gal I was dating canceled a few hours before it was time to leave. So I wasn't even gonna attend after that, but out of the blue my newly ex wife shows up at the door for a visit, something she would do every so often with me. So I told her I had these free tickets and the next thing I know we're on our way to the show after finding a babysitter for our kids.

Only 3 of the Monkees were there on stage (no Michael N) but damn, it was as much fun to watch the fans as it was to see the band play, and the audience was mainly made up of women around my age - along with their teenage daughters, and all of them screaming like it was 1966! A very fun time indeed, and the Monkees put on a very good show!

The top surprising show I've seen, which also landed in my top 6 or 7 best shows ever for any overall concert, well I just noted it the other day here - The Pretenders show in Colorado Sps. in the late '70s. The old City Auditorium where they played was half empty and I wasn't a true fan of the band (yet), just liked them at the time, but my wife wanted to go and that's the reason I was there. I had no clue how great a show we would see that night, and had no clue Ray Davies would show up and play about 90% of the show with them! Guess that could be another thread - what special guest did you get to see who you weren't expecting to see at a rock show? For me it was Lennon of course, but this show with Ray showing up was second, although I don't think any other show I ever attended had any surprise guests other than those 2!
