RE: My picks

I'll start off my picks with the Rock Poll and respond to DA's comment about this:

To me, any death, especially an early one, is an awful moment.

Well yes, but the take on this would be, which one would have been the one death to be the worst to affect rock music and it's music overall, not just our mood.

I noted this the other day after Bobby and Ian died, that in the '60s we lost so many great musicians and it's a wonder that the music didn't even take a bigger hit than it did. But all of those deaths combined did affect the music, and the pick where I noted more than one death together was made to cover that, yet I just couldn't cover all of the death that took place in a short period of time (no room), there were too many, so there were more names that were left out.

Yet with that said, I didn't pick that as my choice, guess it would go down as my #2 pick, as I went with a more personal choice, that being John' Lennon's killing. I felt like I lost a close family member that night when I heard the news and I know that any other rocker's death would not affect me in such a matter. When Mick or Keith's final day comes around, I'll be able to say that they lived a good, long life, and they got away with things that would have killed anybody else years ago (especially Keith). Brian's death hurt too, and he was still a kid when it occurred, which makes any death worst to handle if you care about the person. Had I known at the time that he really was killed, I think I would have felt a lot like I did the day John was killed. Same deal with the plane deaths, etc. I mean, how could anything on that list be worse than losing a person? Perhaps this poll should have been broken up to include both death and non-death events? Well, it's too late now and I don't think that deep when I'm putting any poll together, only after it's published. But in the non-death category, I guess I would go with something along the lines of censorship of music, as that's like a different kind of killing in it's own way.... plus not crediting other band members for their work is real bad too, although overall it doesn't hurt rock too much overall, just the band or artist in question.

Stones Poll: "What a Shame" and that wonderful slide BJ plays on it! "All Sold Out" is excellent too, and another song we should talk about more here.

VS Poll: 'Beechwood 45789' is my pick. Yes, the song about Jenny is great fun to hear too, unless you listen closely and then you realize how much of a rip-off it is of the Marvelettes song. I mean, it's the very same damn song, taking on the very same subject and actions! So no way I could vote for that one for that reason. Also, I know that 'Beechwood 45789' is very old and most might not remember it, in fact I think that was already the case when '867-5309/Jenny' came out 20 years later, people had already forgotten about the Beechwood song. But with both songs, they are short and so catchy, so if you don't know them, I bet if you give both a listen a couple of times you will, as they are that catchy and fast to get to know.

Beatles Poll: "I've Got a Feeling". I can't help but think of the Beatles movie Let It Be, while they are in the studio recording this song and Paul's reaction when George nails the wailing but slowly fading guitar part, it's just priceless! Especially after, in another scene, he is shown trying to get George to play that part in the way he wants it to be played and how he wants it to sound. People put Paul down for this kind of action, but it was his song, and had he not taught George the way he wanted the guitar to sound, and that is a very unusual sound you don't hear in any other song, well the song wouldn't be as good as it turned out to be. Another guitarist would had just played that part himself if the other couldn't get it, but Paul made sure that George did, and he excelled with it once he understood what Paul wanted to hear. But even without seeing all of that as it took place, it's still IMO the best guitar part for George on this week's list.
