Week 800!/Telephone #s/Rock history/George

We hit a milestone at our Stones poll this week as we enter week number 800!… that’s 15.3 years of polling for this poll, and with only one week lost out of all those weeks/years where the poll wasn't run because of our domain's server dying one weekend 12 years ago. Out of all those weeks, only a handful of questions were ever repeats, with 99% of the questions new ones each week. So this week we ask: Of the Stones songs that nobody ever talks about, which one is best?

I only considered original and released Stones songs for this question, and all of them turned out to be Jagger/Richards songs, since the B. Wyman and Nanker/Phelge songs (the released ones anyway) are talked about often enough. So I came up with 24 songs that I noticed are never written or spoken about, not only here in Gasland, but at other places, too.

This should be interesting to see which song ends up on top since the songs listed are all the deepest of the deep cuts for the Stones. Which one do you think is the best? Let us know by voting here in this poll: Stones Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Stones poll we asked: Tiebreaker poll: On which song did Charlie Watts play his drums best, 'Get Off Of My Cloud' or 'Paint It Black'? We did pick a winner from these 2 songs and the final results were very close indeed! To see which song ended up on top, just click on this link: Stones Weekly Poll - week 799 for the final poll results.

Now to the Classic Rock Poll, where it’s week 442, and we’ll be running the usual 2 poll questions for the week. With the first question we will ask this: What was the worst moment in Rock history? Perhaps you guessed this question after the one we asked last week. I came up with 46 bad or disturbing events that took place with our favorite music and now we fans will decide which one out of the bunch was the worst.

No question, some of these things noted were worse than some of the others listed, but which one was the very worst? Just click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

At the VS Rock poll this week we will ask this: 'Beechwood 45789' (by The Marvelettes) vs '867-5309/Jenny' (by Tommy Tutone), which song is best? 2 songs about leaving a telephone number with somebody who the person wishes to date, the first one being a gal leaving her number with a guy, with the second one being the opposite, and both songs have very catchy lyrics and are really the same song lyric wise, other than the guy in the Tommy Tutone song seems a lot more desperate for a date.

Now if you were born before the early to mid-1970s, the number “Beechwood 45789” might not make too much sense to you, as this song, written in 1962 by Marvin Gaye (who also plays the drums on the song), William Stevenson (who produced it), and George Gordy, was written before we had all numbers in our telephone phone numbers. Before the early ‘70s, there were no area codes and we used what were called “telephone exchanges” instead, and everybody’s phone number started with a name instead of the first 2 numbers, this again was before area codes were made up in the late ‘60s. So if your number was Beechwood 45789, you would actually dial “BE4 -5789” (from anywhere) to get that, and this is why letters were on the telephones above the numbers. Today that number would be “234-5789”. Another interesting thing was although there were many different telephone exchanges with many different names, “Beechwood” wasn’t a real exchange name, so nobody had to worry about having this number and being called once the song was a major hit, and it was a top 20 hit when released in ’62.

“867-5309/Jenny” came out in 1981 and was written by Alex Call and Jim Keller (the band’s guitarist). It went all the way to #4 on the charts. Call (who wrote all of the lyrics) claims the name was just made up by him and Jenny never existed, yet Keller (who wrote the music) claims Jenny was a gal he actually dated. So one of them isn’t telling the truth on this one, nor admitting that the song is perhaps a rip off of the Marvelettes song, or perhaps even Steely Dan’s 1974 hit song “Rikki Don't Lose That Number”, which has lyrics written (and sang) almost the same as this song about Jenny: “Jenny don't change your number” . I’ll also note that since “867-5309” was a real number, people across the US who had this number, regardless of their area code, weren’t too happy with this song and most had to change their numbers because of getting calls for Jenny in the middle of the nite.

So which of these 2 songs do you like better? To cast your vote in this week’s VS poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll we asked: What was the most important moment in Rock history?

Well, it turns out for both rock poll questions last week, we ended up with ties in both… Boo! This is the first time we ever had a double tie take place with both of these polls in the very same week. At least with this first question, we do run tiebreakers when this happens and sometime in the next few weeks we’ll do this, more than likely after the New Year passes.

The tie for this poll was between “Elvis Presley's first record release ('That's Allright Mama', July 5, 1954)”, and “The Beatles first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show (February 9, 1964)”, both taking in 10.8% of the votes each. Some might argue that another listing, “The Beatles start the British invasion in the US (February 7,1964)” is really the same thing as this other Beatle listing, and this listing took in enough votes for fourth place on its own. But truth is, if you were anywhere around the NYC area on February 7,1964, 2 days before the Sullivan show, you know that the British invasion, along with Beatlemania, started 2 days earlier, even if their coming to the US was connected to the TV show.

Anyway, to view the full, final results from this poll, just click on: Classic Rock Poll week 441. The top 10 from this poll will also be listed on the new: Top Ten Lists Page 11.

In last week’s VS poll we asked: 'Free Bird' (by Lynyrd Skynyrd) vs 'Stairway to Heaven' (by Led Zeppelin), which song is best?. 2 weeks ago we saw for only the second time since we started this line of questing, a tie reached in this VS poll, yet now for the second week in a row – another tie! Yuck! Unlike the other weekly polls we run here, we don’t run tiebreaker polls for the VS poll, since we already put the 2 songs up against each other once, so I guess we’ll never get an answer to this question, other than they are both equal songs.

Oh well, to view the tie results, click on: Classic Rock VS Poll week 441. You can also check out the final results at the new VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

We finish up the weekly polls as usual at the Beatles’ poll, where it’s week 195, and the question is: Of the Beatles songs to feature George on lead guitar, which one did he play best on? (Part 2 of 3) . Week 2 will list another 56 songs where George plays the lead, and yes, we are going thru this list in alphabetical order. To make your pick just click on: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Beatle poll we asked: Of the Beatles songs to feature George on lead guitar, which one did he play best on? (Part 1 of 3) 8 songs saw enough votes to make their way into Part 2, they are: Here Comes the Sun (13.4%); I Feel Fine (with John) (10.7%); A Hard Day's Night (10.3%), Come Together (10.3%), Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey (10.3%), Helter Skelter (with John and Paul) ( 10.3%); Baby's in Black (9.9%), Doctor Robert (9.9%).

To see the full results for this poll, click on: Beatle’s Weekly Poll – week 194.

I thank all of you who took the time to vote in the polls during the last week, and for voting again in this week’s new polls, too!
