There is just something so etched in our minds about the distinctions between the decades of the 60s, 70s, and 80s. The 80s seem to be about hair bands, artificiality creeps in through the form of synthesizers and other devices, over-prduction, style before substance, the selling out of major artists and bands.
But everything that I've just said above happened many years before Jan 1, 1980.
There is some great rock n' roll in the 1980s, and great stuff in other genres too.
What is widely regarded as the greatest classical album of all time is Glenn Gould performing Bach's Goldberg Variations, and this masterwork was released in '81 or '82.
There was excellent Jazz in the 80s. My other all time favourite performer, Frank Sinatra, made at least one great album in he 80s.
And of course the Rolling Stones opened the decade with a masterpiece, Tattoo You, and closed it out with a great comeback.
