They are streaming the new album on I-Tunes, and overall its pretty darn good for a modern-day Brain era album- much better than Black Ice was. It is much leaner at 11 tracks and there is a lot more reverb on the vocals that give the songs a more epic vibe. Even though Malcolm is not on the recoding, all the songs were songs that he and Angus had worked on together and credits go to Ang and Mal. Their nephew Stevie does a fanatic sounding job taking over the roll of Malcolm, and the troubled Phil Rudd seems to put in a solid beat down that is at the fore front of the songs, more prominently than I can ever recall, but with less variety. Cliff holds a steady groove as always and shines on a couple of tracks in particular.
Apart from the fantastic tittle track and Playball, my favorites on the album are Got me Some Rock'n Roll Thunder, which has an almost CCR vibe and Hard Times, which grooves very nicely - both have a fun catchy choruses. Miss Adventure has cool and fast boogie riff, and Sweet Candy is a fun song about strippers. I dig the notey riff of Emission Control and there is some cool backup vocals throughout the song. Overall there seems to be a more classic rock vibe going on here, almost close to the Let There be Rock/Powerage style riffs, but with Brian's vocals sounding more like the mid to late 80s. There a lot more back up vocals on this album than in years, which is pretty cool. 3.5 out 5 for me.
