RE: RE: Paul Trynka Interview

I purchased it about 2 weeks ago and heave been reading it off and on. He gets into a lot of details and has credible references from dozens of interviews. There's quite a bit of substance added to the songwriting issue: The Stones' accountant (don't recall the name) advised Brian that he should stop giving Mick and Keith a "blank check" for songs that he had an equal role in creating. Jack Nitzsche is quoted as saying that Brian came up with the harpsichord riff for "Play With Fire" even though he (Nitzsche) played it on the actual recording. One surprise -- apparently the late Gene Clarke of Byrds fame had acknowledged that he and Brian wrote "Eight Miles High" together while the band was in L.A. McGuinn got a credit for the killer 12-string soloes, as he should have, and Crosby for changing a few words here and there, but Brian was overlooked. And of course Ruby Tuesday is covered in detail.

The described contrast in styles between Brian Epstein's management of the Beatles and ALO of the Stones is stark. Epstein knew that each Beatle had their own group of fans, and he sought to make them a band of equals. Harrison was encouraged to write (not as much by John and Paul however who saw him as a lesser talent in that department), and Ringo had the vocal spotlight for one song per album even though his voice was no match for the others. Oldham, on the other hand, was fixated on Jagger as being the unwavering focal point of the band, and was also keen on the Jagger-Richards songwriting "brand". This brand and the songs that bears evolved in many different ways. Some were collaborations between Mick and Keith. Others were written individually by one of them. And some were initiated by Bill or Brian and finished by the band as a whole (Nanker Phelge didn't really go away after '65). And still others were started by Mick or Keith, and completed by Brian. But the "brand" always remained the same, and apparently ALO in his quest for matching the Lennon-McCartney rivalry was not going to allow for any variation that gave credit to the others.
