Rolling Stones’ Let It Bleed 45th Anniversary

Former Stones Mick Taylor, Bill Wyman Recount Album, Tour, Altamont

Dallas, TX - November 18, 2014. North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History’s Greatest Rock Bands revisits the Rolling Stones circa 1969 with former Stones guitarist Mick Taylor and bassist Bill Wyman on the 45th anniversary of the landmark album Let It Bleed,

For the Stones 1969 was a pivotal year. Drug convictions had sidelined the group from touring for nearly three years and mismanagement had all but bankrupted them. The Stones replaced founder/guitarist Brian Jones with twenty-one year old blues prodigy Mick Taylor. On July 3rd, only a month after his departure, Jones would die of by drowning. Two days later the band would perform with Taylor in tow, playing to over 200K people in London’s Hyde Park, the first UK outdoor concert of its kind.

Creatively speaking, the Stones were on a roll working with American producer Jimmy Miller who would guide their talents on Let It Bleed, helping the band realize such hit songs as “Gimme Shelter”, “Midnight Rambler, “Let It Bleed”, and the epic “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”.

Unfortunately, an Autumn U.S. tour would end tragically including a murder in front of the stage while the band performed at an unscheduled free concert at Altamont Speedway outside San Francisco. Mick Taylor recalls to InTheStudio host Redbeard the atmosphere surrounding the events as the Stones arrived here.

“We had no idea how it was being promoted or publicized. It was a terribly disorganized chaotic event that not only ended in tragedy, but it was kinda a very violent atmosphere... I remember even when we got out of the helicopter... a couple people tried to punch Mick in the face.”
