I'm positive it came from Duane, as he did play that "bird call" live often, even in the earliest of days and long before this song came out. In fact, it is named after him, it's known, or at least was known as "Duane's bird call". You can bet that Rossington got it from him.

You're most likely right, although I'm sure that Rossington would take credit for it if he got half the chance.

John on the other hand played nothing on this great song, he only added in his backing vocals to it and came up with a bit of the lyrics, the ones about Harold Wilson and Edward Heath.

I didn't know that John played no guitar on that song. Are you sure that he came up with the Wilson/Heath line? I read in some Beatles book a long time ago that George wrote that song because he was getting really tired of paying so much tax. I think that at the time, the marginal tax rate in Britain was an insane 90% or some such. Which, I believe, is why the Stones moved to France in the early 70s.
