I understand what you are saying, DA, but many bands have lost members and forged ahead... our Stones, The Who and even your Doors! Plus they played several benefit shows as Led Zep with Jason Bonham. I think you may be on to something when you say it could be a vocals thing, though. He probably doesn't want to embarrass himself if he really can't hit those high notes anymore.
