Still Life/Song's opening/Time/Help!

We enter week 795 of our Stones poll with the second week of the latest series of questions where we rate the artwork for each of the Stones albums. This week we ask:Rate the artwork for the front cover of Still Life. Still Life was recorded live during the 1981 tour and released in June of 1982. The album’s cover is of a painting made by Japanese artist Kazuhide Yamazaki, whose work had earlier inspired the ’81 tour's stage design. I never could be sure what this drawing on the cover was all about, is that supposed to be a … stage??... but the Stones liked it, whatever it was. Did you? To let us know, take a second to vote in this week’s Stones’ poll, just click on this link to do so: Stones Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Stones poll we asked: Rate the artwork for the front cover of Get Ya Ya's Ya Out!. The cover for Get Ya Ya's Ya Out! is well loved by fans, and it became the 14th Stones album cover to be rated a “10” by fans with 31.6% of the vote (the 9th highest percentage scored for a “10” overall). “8” was the second place pick (at 31.4%), and “9” was the number 3 pick (with 17.4%). Click on this link: Stones Weekly Poll - week 794 for the full, final poll results. You can also check out the list of the top ratings given for all of the 41 album covers that we have rated so far in this series at the Stones Fans Picks Page 2. We still have 11 more album covers to vote on in this long running series after we finish with Still Life this week, but still, we are getting near the end of this, too.

Let’s now look at this week’s Classic Rock Poll, where it’s week 437 of this poll and we’ll be running the usual 2 poll questions for the week. The first question asks: What rock song has the best opening to it? (Part 4 of 6) 33 new songs go up against each other this week and only the top 5 will live on to see Part 6.

Which song will you pick in Part 4? To see this week’s list and vote, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

For the VS Rock poll, those of us who dislike Daylight Savings Time were pleased to see its ending come around today, and I figured asking a question about the time of day would be fun to run in honor of us getting back to the actual correct time. So we will ask this:'25 or 6 to 4' vs 'Does Anybody Know What Time It Is', which Chicago song about time is better? Two excellent songs by Chicago and both were written by their keyboardist, Robert Lamm, back in 1969. 'Does Anybody Know What Time It Is' was sung by Lamm and released on their first album Chicago Transit Authority which was also the band’s full name at the time. The song was a mild protest about people living their lives by rushing all over the place against the clock and letting it run and ruin their lives. Although this song appeared on their début album in ‘69, it wasn't released as a single until October of 1970, long after their second album had been issued. Not sure why this single was released a year and a half after it appeared on their first album, but it would become their third single in a row to reached the top 10, peaking at #7 in the first week of 1971.

"25 or 6 to 4", was released on their second LP, Chicago, which reflected the band’s new shorten name. It was the single release before 'Does Anybody Know What Time It Is' and although written by Lamm, it featured bassist Peter Cetera on lead vocals. Another song recorded in mid '69 but not issued as a single till the summer of 1970. This one went to #4 on the U.S. charts and to #7 on the UK Singles Chart. "25 or 6 to 4" is a simple song written about staying up all night - and writing a song about staying up all night while writing a song! The title reflects what the time was when the song was written - that being 3:35 am (or 3:34 am), or 25 (or 26) minutes till 4 am.

So which song about the time of the day do you dig more? To cast your vote in this week’s VS poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll we asked: What rock song has the best opening to it? (Part 3 of 6) Because of ties, 8 songs ended up in the top 5 spots, they were: “Baba O Riley” by The Who (13.2%); “Layla” by Derek & The Dominos (7.4%); “Day Tripper” by The Beatles (7%). “Down By The River” by Neil Young (7%); “Iron Man” by Black Sabbath (6.8%). “Ma-Ma-Ma Belle” by the Electric Light Orchestra (6.8%), “Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting” by Elton John (6.8%), “Whole Lotta Love” by Led Zeppelin (6.8%). The Stones 2 songs landed in 9th and 10th place just missing out by only a few votes, but all the rest of the songs that didn’t make the cut were way back in the total vote count.

In last week’s VS poll we asked this question : 'Werewolves Of London' (original by Warren Zevon) vs 'Thriller'(cover by Michael Jackson), which song about the undead is best? Our Halloween week poll question was fun to run, but the final result wasn’t too close at all. To find out which song won in a landslide, click on: Classic Rock VS Poll week 436. You can also check out the final results at the new VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

Now over to the Beatles’ poll, where it’s week 190, and week 5 of asking for the least liked song per Beatle LP; so this week’s question is: What is your least favorite song on the Beatles LP Help! ?.

The Beatles fifth UK album, it was released in the UK on August 6, 1965 and included 14 songs. The American release, which came out at the same time, was the true soundtrack album for their movie of the same name, yet the UK LP was clearly the better album, as the US release had 5 non Beatle, non-rock songs on it out of its 12 song total.

But we are only looking at the UK LP, and remember, you’re voting for the least favorite song on here, so if you’re like me and dig all 14 of these songs, just vote for the one you like the least. To take part in this week’s Beatles poll, just click on: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Beatle poll we asked: What is your least favorite song on the Beatles LP Beatles For Sale In 3 of the 4 weeks of asking this question we’ve seen just one song each week that gets a ton of votes, and this happened again last week with “Mr Moonlight” being that song for this LP, taking in a whopping 39.6% of all the votes. The 2 songs tied for second place took in less than 10% of the vote, so yes, another landslide finish for sure.

To see the full results for this poll, click on: Beatle’s Weekly Poll – week 189. The top results from this poll will also show up on this page: Favorite/Least Favorite Beatle Songs per LP .

I thank all of you who vote each week in our polls and remind all of my fellow US Gassers that on this Tuesday we have an even more important vote to make, as it will be Election Day, so please find the time to get out and vote, as your participation is needed and very important as to which party will control our government for at least the next 2 years.
