When "videos" first came along in the pop/rock world they were decried, denounced, and panned by purists. They were thought to be cheap and an offence against art, as they put style before substance. They made the appearance of the band matter more. Not that it didn't matter before - but it was taken to a new level with music videos.
But I am wondering... do music videos even matter today? We live in a world that has been irrevocably changed by digitization, downloads (legal and illegal), and the fact that there's less TV watching and more computer use. Kids really do seem to have a shorter attention span too, shorter even than they did in the 80s.
I, for one, don't think they matter as much as they did in the 80s. I remember back in the 80s when the video for a new Stones song was to be released. It was a big deal! Videos then at least tried to tell a story, sometimes with a few minutes before and after the song. Nowawdays, I truly couldn't care less about videos even for my all time favourite bands.
