I think that most people, even many of those who speak against it, are actually in favour of it in the right circumstances. I think you have to put yourself in the position of the woman I mentioned in the original post. She's headed for a painful, awful death. In that position, I can't imagine anyone in that position NOT wanting this option.

I guess what people fear - and its already been alluded to here - is the idea that if this is legal there could be all sort of issues that would arise. Who gets to decide? Some panel of doctors and ethicists? Or the patient alone? Who decides how bad your pain is? You or someone else? Could a 'slippery slope' lead to people just being allowed to die if they choose to, with or without a medical condition? And how would mental anguish be evaluated?

Its a tough issue. But I think future generations will work it our at the societal level.
