My mother had always told us that she didn't want to be kept alive if there was no hope. But when that time came, she realized that she wasn't ready. Fortunately she was able to tell us this. She finally died on her own, peacefully, when she was ready to go.

I'm telling this intensely personal story to show that even if a person has a living will or has expressed his/her wishes in other ways, it's a good idea to confirm with them that this is still what they want. Provided, of course, that they can still make their wishes heard.
