RE: What's Spinning?

DA, I have one you might approve of: have you heard the 13th Floor Elevators? Their debut (1966) is a pumped up psychedelic wonderland, but all their stuff is great; kind of an exciting cross between the Stones and the Doors, and in a way crazier than both those bands ever got.

From the same scene, and label (out of Texas), I've been digesting the debut album from the Red Krayola (1967), "The Parable of Arable Land." It is more tripped out, in the vein of the Bay-area bands of the 60s, but quite an experience.

Additionally, "If Only I Could Remember My Name" by David Crosby (1971) a blissed out beauty of an experience unlike nearly anything in "older rock" I've heard, as long as you let it sink in and don't try to do or think ANYTHING while listening to it.

Two offshoots of the Bay-area scene (the 'Dead and Moby Grape):

New Riders of the Purple Sage (debut, 1971) - an enjoyable country-rock collection of tunes, but nothing approaching the rewards of the albums above.

Skip Spence "Oar" (1969) - a harrowing experience that is really pretty draining, still unsure if it is "rewarding."

One album from one scene leads to so many offshoots I'll never be able to catch up. I just get further behind. As an aside, "Sweetheart of the Rode" is, as one gasser put it a couple years ago, a stone-cold-classic.
