Is Rock music (as we have known it) dead?

I was reading an interesting article where Gene Simmons says Rock is basically dead. He says that record companies don't support tours, that these companies (and not fans) decide what sort of music will be made and recorded, and that artists don't have much autonomy, and that all this sucks the life and creativity out of the whole industry.

What do you make of these ideas?
