RE: RE: Many many many replies all in one!

Of course Keith speaks with an authority that none of us can, and that comes from the fact that he actually knew Brian Jones and was there.

I don't expect Keith Richards to be completely accurate in everything he says about events that happened some 40 odd years ago, any more than I could be completely accurate about everything that was going on with me 40 odd years ago.

It is not unusual when I get together with my mates and we talk about things from way back that our memories of events differ, sometimes markedly, and we certainly didn't live the whirlwind life that Keith Richards did. In fact given the lifestyle, would you expect Keith Richards to have total recall of every event in the sixties 5, 10, 15, 20 or thirty years later, let alone 45?

Of course one of the other things that tends to happen with the passage of time, especially when you can't remember exactly what happened, is that stories tend to get embellished. Events are made more dramatic than they were, ones role is promoted or diminished to suit etc etc, it appears to be a human trait, you'll notice it, especially if you read autobiographies. So maybe some of what you think of as revisionism is that, human behaviour. You'll probably find yourself doing it, and there doesn't necessarily have to be a motive other than to give a story a little more colour.

I think guys like Keith Richards are interviewed all the time, they must find it tedious to be asked the same or similar questions over and over. I am absolutely sure in that situation for their own light relief from being bored shitless answering the same questions the same way, or for devilment or to be controversial, they would say things that were not necessarily the whole truth. In their situation who wouldn't? I certainly would.

As far as being interviewed about Brian I am quite sure on some occasions Keith for whatever reason (possibly at the point in time it was politic to do so, or maybe he just wanted to) has chosen to recount 'nice things', at others he has thought 'you want something about Brian?, ok here's something about the not so nice side of him'. Is this possible?

I think another thing to keep in mind about Keith Richards (and the other Stones) is that he is not a Brian Jones 'fan'. You can find Brian Jones fans on the internet, you can find them dissecting every minute detail of his life, every conspiracy theory is pored over, every perceived slight railed against, every perceived transgressor denounced, you can even find them holding séances to get in touch. These people are obsessed, and one thing becomes obvious pretty quickly, largely they live in a sixties time capsule, everything frozen as it was up until Brian Jones' death in 69.

Of course the other Rolling Stones were not Brian Jones 'fans', they were his friends to one extent or another, and band mates. I have no doubt that they were all traumatised by his death, and would have gone through their own grieving processes. However that was forty five years ago, a lifetime ago.

Unlike the obsessive fans the Rolling Stones have not remained in the sixties, they have lived diverse lives, raised families, become 'The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World', done a million things, they're not the same. It is highly unlikely that after 45 years Brian Jones is central in Keith Richards or any of the Stones thoughts, or of any real significance in their lives anymore, that's perfectly natural.

I'm not saying you are an obsessive fan DA, just getting there lol. Seriously though, I have put forward a few things that might be taken into account when judging Keith Richards or the 'Glimmers' even. I mean to 'despise' someone you don't know because of what he has said or done(or what you believe he has said or done) to someone else you have never met, is when we are talking about a rock band, a bit (forgive me DA)....well I don't know what it's a bit really lol.

Anyway back to authority. I believe none of the above in any way changes the fact that when he speaks about Brian Jones, Keith does so with the authority of having known the man intimately: lived in flats together, froze together, worked on their guitar playing together, behaved like a couple of pricks together, travelled in vans and airplanes on the road together, bunked up together in boarding houses and hotels, worked in studios together, shared dressing rooms, partied in clubs and pubs together, played together on stage hundreds of times, made their getaways together, and god alone knows what else they did together.

None of us have that experience, therefore our words on Brian Jones do not carry ,and never can carry the authority of those of Keith Richards. Like it or lump it.
