I've been half-interested in the story of them recently giving away their new album free on iTunes. THey've been getting a lot of kudos for "giving it away" but then I'm reading that Apple possibly paid them a hefty sum for the album, and then other reports had Apple investing $100 million in the marketing campaign for it. Regardless, I know one thing: the U2 back catalog is apparently selling well again. I'm sure that was a big reason for this decision. I used to love U2, but in the past 10 years or so, they've lost me. I'd love for them to put out a kick ass record again, but I don't see that happening. And the cynical me looks at this recent gesture as another way for them to make themselves look like these big altruistic rock stars, when in fact, they're cashing in big.
Repeat after me: there is no such thing as a free lunch. And there's no such thing as a "free" album.
I think you're right about Bono and Co. wanting to look like big altruistic rock stars when they're actually very far removed from that idyllic image. It's not the first time they've done this, and they're far from the only ones doing it also.
Don't forget that U2 is a corporation, and all coporations have some sort of "social responsibility" PR bullcrap material that their communications department puts out in order to show the world how sensitive and caring they are, and which charities they support.
