Weren't singles, in those days, backed up (B side) with a song from the actual album that was about to be released?

You didn't realize it, but you answered your own question when you wrote this next: JJF was backed up with Child of the Moon, which also didn't appear on an album. We Love You was single which had Dandelion as it's B Side...which also wasn't on an album. So, no, not always was a song from a studio album the B side of a single.
