What I have heard is that Apple paid 100 million dollars to release the album, and that all iTunes subscribers get it automatically.
This has some people quite upset. Some say the free giving of the album cheapens music, devalues it, and makes it harder for bands that actually need money.
Others don't like the fact that the albums distribution is akin to Spyware.
Outside of the Joshua Tree I've never really cared that much for U2. But I don't see what all the fuss is about. U2 and Apple are free to work whatever deal they wish, and its not against the the law for Apple to insert content into their program.
Nor do I see how U2 giving their music away "devalues" music. I'd say many other changes to the music business have done far worse than this has.
What do you guys all think about this?
